Lauren Shuler-Donner talks yet again about the X-Men
I'm getting tired of hearing her - or the studio - change her mind every five minutes, but Lauren Schuler-Donner finally did a full-length interview with Empire Magazine so I decided I'd better post the news, as it does give us some insight as to what we're going to see in coming years.
First off, the next Wolverine film will do what Lauren claims she wanted it to do in the first place, which is cover Wolvie's journey through Japan and his falling in love with Mariko, as told in the Wolverine comics a few years back. They are also going to try to be accurate about Japanese culture, Japanese fighting, and it will look and feel different than Wolverine: Origins felt.
Next up, X-Men First Class is apparently still being developed (?!) with Cyclops and the others at the core, despite the fact she said she wants to get X-4 up and running. Why? She doesn't really say, but she says the screenplay isn't done yet because "We're not where we want to be." How many freaking X-Men movies do we need to see? Pick a branch - go to X-4 or go to First Class, but doing both - this is not a comic book industry where you can publish simultaneous titles and expect more revenue. This is stupid. She also said the movie would be more funny, more adventurous, more like the comic book, but I just don't care.
Deadpool is the next film she's working on after Wolverine, and she doesn't feel that Ryan Reynolds playing Green Lantern will stand in the way of anything. She swears Green Lantern and Deadpool are completely different (which they are), and the two movies won't conflict. They are currently trying to work out a story and screenwriter that won't be terrible. Ryan Reynolds and she want to have Deadpool break the fourth wall, like he does int he comics, but it has to be done in a good way that the studio will approve of. Here's hoping.
Last up, Shuler-Donner states that the Magneto movie may not even get made. David Goyer wrote an incredible script, but since the studio has a "wealth of ideas" they have to decide which ones to go with, and Magneto Origins is in the back of the queue.
Whatever. I wish Fox would just dump the franchise and let Marvel handle it - they seem to be doing just fine on their own now, and I'd rather see the X-Men integrated into the Marvel universe at large.
