Movie Quick Thoughts: IGOR

Igor was a fun little CG-animated film starring John Cusack, John Cleese, Steve Buscemi, Sean Hayes, Eddie Izzard, and Molly Shannon, amongst others. The cast list alone got my attention, but when I saw the trailer a year ago I knew I wanted to see it, but the money just wasn't there at the time.

So, Igor was a fun rental for me a few weeks back and I wanted to share my thoughts. Igor takes place in the Kingdom of Malaria, where it rains all the time. The town wasn't always that bad, but one day the clouds came and never left. The Mayor decided to take charge of the crisis and make the town change to suit the new weather - so he promoted Mad Science as the primary export of the kingdom! Soon the little burg became divided into three casts - the Doctors (or Scientists), the Igors, and the Monsters. The Igors were all forced to speak with the stereotypical accent you'd expect Igors to speak with, and the Mad Scientists were all British.

As the story goes on, you learn that the primary character, Igor, is one of the smartest, if not the smartest, Igor in the entire kingdom, and he is trying to work on a monster of eternal life, but he's under the thumb of his Doctor. Soon, however, his Doctor dies at the failure of his own experiment, and Igor masquerades as if the Doctor were still there, while performing experiments of his own.

There is an evil Scientist, Dr. Schadenfreude, who has, every year, won the Invention of the Year award, mainly because he steals them from other people, though nobody other than possibly the Mayor knows this. And when he realizes that Igor is trying to create Eternal Life, he of course wants in.

The rest of the movie is a very funny, silly little tale, a morality play of sorts, as he finally makes his immortal monster, and his creation comes alive, but isn't evil, she's good! A whole lot of comedic events ensue as he tries to brainwash her into evil, and she ends up believing she's an actress (which, some would say, is close enough, heh).

I won't spoil the end for anyone who hasn't seen it, but I thought it was better than your average CG animated film. There were a lot of cute little twists, the cast was brilliant at playing these quirky characters, and the whole movie had me laughing, hard, which is a rare thing these days.

You should definitely find it and rent it, as soon as you can, if you like somewhat-family oriented quirky humor.
