World of Warcraft movie has big writer!
As per my statement earlier today about movies coming from the writing, Sam Raimi has hired an award winning writer to tackle his upcoming World of Warcraft movie, being called - for now - Warcraft.
According to Slashfilm, they've hired the writer of Saving Private Ryan, Robert Rodat, to pen the screenplay for Warcraft.
Raimi is quoted as saying:
We want to be really faithful to the game. We would have our writer, Robert Rodat, really craft an original story within that world that feels like a ‘World of WarCraft’ adventure. Only obviously it’s very different ’cause it’s expanded and translated into the world of a motion picture.
While I respect people choosing famously awesome writers for movies, I'm not 100% sure how "Saving Private Ryan" awesome translates into the same kind of awesome as "World of Warcraft" does. Earlier, several people were questioning whether Justin Lin, well known for his action films, could handle a deep, more metaphorical and human tale of Highlander - this strikes me as a different aspect of the same problem.
Then again, at its core, the Warcraft concept has always been about a long running war between two varied and intense sides, so perhaps I'm not going deep enough.
Either way, I have a feeling this movie is going to be epic, and I love epic movies. I just pray that Sam keeps his tendency for noir-ish mild shmaltz out of this film, because his directing style always tends to irritate me.
