TV week in Review: Quick Thoughts

Quick Thoughts from Phil on Heroes, Fringe, Flash Forward, Stargate Universe, Dollhouse, Star Wars: The Clone Wars

HEROES:

Acceptance

Zombie Sylar??? I know he's got Claire's healing power but can we please just give it up. The ending of that episode was so predictable. Part of me says that this season is better that the last two years only because it seems to be more about the central characters than the plot of the season. Peter, Claire, Noah especially have so pretty good content to work off of, but the problem for me is that it doesn't seem to be going anywhere. I don't buy the Carnival folk; in fact, I don't even get them or want to even see them any more. The whole thing with Nathan/Sylar is so friggin' lame and I'm really tired seeing momma Petrelli doing her thing.

That's all I really have to say about Heroes; enough is enough already. I though the season opener was alright and the episodes that have followed have been alright but overall, maybe it's time to close up.

Than again, Monday's episode does look pretty good. I'll say from the beginning of the series up till now, Peter has been my favorite character. He's had the potential to really become the shows hero but the writers can't figure it out and write him great epic material. At least we get to see Ernie Hudson this week!

FRINGE:

Momentum Deferred

Finally, after the entire summer and a couple of episodes in, Leonard Nimoy returns to Fringe to let us know, ... what we already know except some stuff that progresses the episode only. Damn.

Personally, I think this episode of Fringe is the best one in the series yet. Leonard Nimoy is amazing, as usual, but for me especially since I'm a big fan he'll always be Spock. He tells us in the episode that a kind of war is coming, however, he doesn't go into details on what that war actually is. Even so, we have a basic idea on who's going to fight this war - the shape shifters, possibly working for The Observers vs. Olivia Dunham who's fighting for us along with the rest of the Fringe cast. We're also introduced to the idea that if the enemy opens a sort of doorway between universes - BOOM!!! One of them is going to cancel the other out and we can't have that!

The scene I really enjoyed but wished we saw more of was at the end; after Olivia kills the shape shifter that stole Charlie's form, both Olivia and Broyles were on a park bench talking, Olivia in obvious agony over her friends death. Like most of us, I hated how Charlie died in the season opener as if it felt senseless and un-needed, but maybe that's the point as we know that all death is un-needed. Forget about serving story - we don't want anyone to die and however it happens, whether in total glory or Derek Reese style, it simply sucks for us viewers who like the character. I'm glad to see Anna Torv showing more emotion into her character; she's strong, yes, but she's in obvious pain with everything that's been going on.

Between the William Bell story and the reveal of Charlie, this episode kicked ass and as usual, I can't wait to see more. Next week looks fun and creepy, check out the preview:

FLASH FORWARD:

137 Sekunden

Never, never introduce a Nazi character and then blow it!! I love this show but I'm a little disappointment in the usage of the old man, a Nazi. As you know from watching the episode, the old man had a little info that will potentially help the investigation of the flash forwards. This is the thing, I though Flash Forward was about to go Castle Wolfenstein on us and I was excited! I thought the old man was going to explain the flash forwards to some old Nazi science project during the war. I'm a sucker for those kinds of stories. Sadly, however, it ended up being about birds.

John Cho is awesome! I'm definitely in the camp that believes Cho should have been cast as the lead character because every time he's on screen, I'm glued. This week we're introduced to Gabrielle Union who plays Zoey, Cho's on screen fiance. She tells him her vision, claiming that it was their wedding when we know Cho could possibly die by the end of the season, although I'm not counting on it. Her vision, honestly, looked a little strange to me. It felt like while watching her flash forward, she was on the beach from Contact. Contact, you remember that film with Jodi Forster. Remember the end of that film, ... that's what it looked like to me.

Also making an appearance is Gina Torres who, upon seeing her, depressed me because I really miss Firefly. She's married to Courtney B. Vance's character, the lead FBI agent. Vance, who had an incredible performance in an older film called Hamburger Hill, a Vietnam film, has a great scene in this episode during the funeral for dead agents. I felt awful when he started crying, but he's such a good actor... seriously, Hamburger Hill, watch it!

The preview for next week doesn't show anything but I'm excited! Take a look:

STARGATE UNIVERSE:

Air Part III

Continuing with the plot from the pilot episode, Rush and Scott lead a team through the gate to a desert world looking for a kind of mineral to clean and repair the air filters on the Destiny. Right off the bat, I can say I enjoyed this episode much more than I did the pilot. They actually moved plot along; there was a story to tell. Even so, some over the top drama made me roll my eyes BIG TIME; specifically, when Armstrong went to tell her mother about her father dying, sacrificing his life to save everyone. Yes, over the top drama, acting, and everything else in the scene is a total understatement. Also, what's with the music at the end of the episode - can we please try and avoid teen drama cliche's. This is the wrong crowd for that - we're actually pretty intelligent people, or we like to think we are which is more than some people could say.

One of the elements in this series that I really like is the usage of the communication stones. I remember when they were first introduced in SG-1. Wow, I really miss that series. I really do. I'm glad, because of that tech, that we won't only be stuck on the Destiny and the part of the universe they're lost in. We can go back and forth from Earth to the destiny. That will also give Lou Diamond Phillips a chance to be involved with the series although I'd rather him the lead star of the show. That's just my opinion.

Next week looks like more of the same forced drama; this time, the power on the Destiny is fading. Oh what shall we do!? Take a look at the preview:

DOLLHOUSE:

Belle Chose

In short, this is a fantastic episode. I loved Belle Chose. I think it's kinda hysterical how the supporting characters, specifically Enver Gjokaj who plays Victor shows how much better actors they are compared to Eliza Dushku. Yes, I love Eliza but lets face it, with most of her characters she plays on Dollhouse, she plays herself. Even still, she's still very entertaining but my point is, Enver and Dichen Lachman, when called on, are real great performers (Lachman looks to have a great episode next).

Let's forget everything else that happened in the episode for a second. Let's just compliment Gjokaj for playing a serial killer than automatically, accidentally, changing over to a woman (Kiki). Brilliant and hysterical!! Without a doubt, the interrogation scene with Paul Ballard and Victor with the killer imprint was pretty amazing. I'm not saying it compared but it was just as cool as Batman and Joker's scene in The Dark Knight. I wish Gjokaj would get more screen time because he seems to really take the multiple roles that he has to play in the series and runs with them. He's convincing at every personality which is tough for him I sure, as it would be for every actor.

How cool was it to see Ballard interrogate, even for a second, his old superior Colonel Tigh! Yes, Battlestar Galactica star Michael Hogan guest starred this week; sadly, however, it was only for a few scenes. Hogan kicks-ass. BSG really has opened doors for him and hopefully he'll get bigger and better work that we can see him in.

You know what sucks? Dollhouse isn't on next week!! WTF!! It's being preempted by Baseball, as far as I know. The week after that, Dichen Lachman who plays Sierra looks to have an episode that explains her story. The important thing, the most important thing this week - the upcoming episode promo features Summer Glau, the woman of all our dreams. Take a look:

STAR WARS: THE CLONE WARS:

Children of the Force

The title say it all. This episode featured a couple of young babies that are strong with the force. You remember from the season premiere; Bane stole a holocron with information that points to force children across the Republic. With that info, he'll kidnap several children for Darth Sidious who plans to train them into becoming Sith spy's and warriors.

Guess what happens in the episode. That's right! Anakin and Ahsoka rescue the children but Bane escapes yet again. That's ok, for the half our that Star Wars: TCW is on, I'm entertained. Have I told you how much I enjoy this series? No, well I love TCW. Light sabers, space ships, blasters - it's all good fun that they give us week after week.

Fringe was good. I hope we see more of the female agent they introduced. And i second your recommendation for Hamburger Hill and would also add Charlie Mopic 84.

    SGU is holding my interest.

I’m starting to wish Flash Forward was a four movie that focused more on the story and less on the angst.

Dollhouse was cool except for that express escape tube the actives seem to have found. I liked how nonchalant Boyd was back in the van.

Yea, I wonder what happen to the female agent. I forgot her name but I thought she was set up for a new regular character.

As for Boyd, that was exactly my thoughts when I saw him sitting in the van reading a book not surprised with all of the craziness going around.
