Zombieland review
Spoilers for Zombieland. Click all images to enlarge!
I'm sure all of us have seen one or two zombie related films; the most recent film I saw with zombies, unfortunately, was Zombie Strippers - exotic naked zombies that danced and ate their patrons. A weird movie for sure. I suppose, however, the only film franchise that I actually keep up with is Resident Evil; it's more action than horror and Milla Jovovich is hot. As most of you are well aware, I've never been a big horror for the scares fan - But I don't mind a good horror comedy. Just a couple of weeks ago, I saw Jennifer's Body which is considered a horror comedy, only the film wasn't exactly top notch although a fun movie at best. I suggest reading my full review of Jennifer's Body if you're interested in seeing it. What Jennifer's Body tried to do and what it wanted to be is this, Zombieland.
I saw Zombieland over the weekend and only now had the chance to post a review (been a little busy), but it will hopefully benefit you because it's Friday and if there is any movie that I suggest seeing tonight or on Saturday it's this, Zombieland. Like most horror films, when news and such started hitting the net about Zombieland I wasn't all that interested, that is, until photos and trailers were being released show how funny and how fun overall Zombieland could potentially be. Woody Harrelson as a zombie killer, ... golden, I say.
Before I even get into my full review of Zombieland, let me say this to you; If you're thinking about seeing this film over the weekend and don't want to be spoiled by my review, than stop now and go see this movie. I highly recommend seeing Zombieland to you and even your girlfriend, and if you're a woman reading this, than you'll make your man a happy dude because Zombieland kicks-ass! This is a great movie that takes the cliches of the genre and just runs with it - it's funny, it's ridiculous, it has some great zombie kills (although I wish there was more), it has a great cameo from a big time actor, and its way of dealing with the world they're stuck in is priceless. Yes, this is going to be a very positive review and it's not the only one as Zombieland holds an 88% at Rottentomatoes.com, a collection website of film reviews from critics for every released film. After you see the film, then by all means come back and see if you agree with my final thoughts.
"A cowardly shut-in named Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) is forced to join up with a seasoned zombie slayer named Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) in order to survive the zombie apocalypse. As Tallahassee sets out on a mission to find the last Twinkie on Earth, the duo meets up with Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin), two young girls who have resorted to some rather unorthodox methods to survive amidst the chaos. Reluctant partners in the battle against the undead, all four soon begin to wonder if it might be better to simply take their chances alone." [Fandango]
Not just in zombie related films but horror films overall, you've see all of the cliches, for example; nobody ever looks in the back seat of their car when you know the killer or monster is back there; why only shoot once when you can shoot twice for good measure; they're always in the bathroom waiting for you; you can never run fast enough because you're out of shape, etc, etc. Zombieland deals with this as the lead character, Columbus, has his simple set of rules on how to survive the zombie apocalypse and it's used throughout the film - you'll notice and LOVE that whenever zombie action is happening, that particular rule will flash on the screen and it's brilliant. I love that Columbus only survives because he avoids the cliches that are so overused in monster movies. You'll get lots of laughs out of those as I did.
It's rare in a film that a simple story doesn't have to be rich in content. What makes Zombieland so impressive is that first and foremost, it's about the characters and less about the story. The story, simply, only involves Woody Harrelson's character Tallahassee searching for Twinkie's and Wichita trying to get herself and Little Rock to a carnival park that has rollercosters and rides. Columbus' story is only about brushing hair over an ear, ... watch the film and you'll understand. The stories are so simple yet the content written for the characters makes the film so rich and enjoyable. Strong characters always makes a good film. You could have strong and interesting characters in a movie or TV show and have the plot surrounded by nothing more than raking dirt in a garden and you'll love it. That's what good character writing and performances can do.
Zombieland wouldn't be anything without the gore and zombie kills. Without a doubt, the make-up work and portrayal of the zombies is fantastic. I love how they're portrayed as more infected instead of undead - I also love how cliche they make them, as in if you turn into a zombie, you automatically blister, have blood all over your face and cloths, etc. It makes no sense but it's great. To be honest, you probably won't even notice that until after the film is over. I won't give any of the kills away; I will say that they're funny yet I wish there was more. Maybe in a sequel!!
It's also worth mentioning that the opening teaser and titles of Zombieland is one of my favorite openings of this year as we're introduced to the world followed by slow motion zombie attacks with Metallica's For Whom the Bell Tolls playing. One word alone can explain that; Incredible!
Zombieland is one of my favorite films this year. I had incredible fun with this as I actually had laugh out loud moments which I don't recall having at all this year in any comedy film. The characters are likable, funny, bad-ass, and I'd like to see them more in future films. People talk about Sam Raimi's Drag Me To Hell being the best horror comedy of they year; now after seeing Zombieland, Drag Me To Hell doesn't compare. To be honest, if Raimi took his film to an R-rating, things might have been different but he didn't so oh well. Zombieland scores easily a 8 out of 10 and I can't wait to see it again!

I agree 100% Phil. This movie was fun and extremely funny. A little too much gore for the g/f, but oh well, I loved it.
saw it last night with some friends, what an unexpected ride! great movie, great laughs, must see!
I’m glad you folks enjoyed as much as I did!
I wonder if more women will go to this than men, as per my Follow-Up article. Hmm.
I liked it. Lots of fun. Creative Screen Writing podcast had a good interview with the writers. Only had to pay 6 dollars for a 1045a showing but there wasn’t much in the way of people for an early morning zombie flick. Recently saw Whip It, which I liked also. Those two together would make for a good dvd party night.
