Cool! Want your own Terminator… Franchise?
The Terminator Franchise is for sale! According to this at the L.A. Times, and several other sites, Halcyon Entertainment, the ... ... wizards... behind Terminator Salvation are going bankrupt (again), and are selling the franchise rights (again).
For those of you familiar with the hoops we've had to jump through with Terminator, this franchise has been through more hands than any major franchise I can think of. It started out as a Helmdale production, with The Terminator. James Cameron owned half of it until he sold his other half to Gale Anne Hurd (his future wife) for 1 dollar. Helmdale then sold the rights to Carolco pictures, owned by Mario Kassar and Andrew Vajna. Carolco brought us the epic event that was Terminator 2 in 1990. Then Carolco went bankrupt in 1997 (ironically the year that the world ended in Terminator 2) and Kassar and vajna created C2 pictures, which I believe (though I wasn't able to find out for sure) produced Terminator 3: the Suck. Then, in a surprising move, they sold their rights to the Terminator franchise in 2007 to Halcyon Holding Group, run by Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, who produced Terminator: Salvation.
Well, in what's hardly a surprise, given the history of these films, Halcyon is selling them because it's about to go bankrupt due to Pacificor, one of their investors, demanding their 32 million back. What's interesting is Halcyon claims it's only over four million. According to the Times, Anderson and Kubicek have been in numerous legal battles before, with Borman, MGM, and other investors.
So the franchise is for sale, and that's going to affect how the campaign to Save the Sarah Chronicles comes out. I hit the io9 Link that I posted here this weekend ( http://io9.com/5368511/producer-dont-give-up-on-the-sarah-connor-chronicles ) but it doesn't state what company James Middleton works for. If it's Warner Brothers (since I believe that was the production house, though not the franchise owner? Hollywood policies are so confusing!) then Middleton might be able to resurrect TSCC, but if the Franchise rights are on the block, we may never see Sarah Connor Chronicles again.
We'll continue to report on this every time we get news about the future of Terminator and TSCC.
