TV week in Review: Quick Thoughts (2009-2010 Season Starts!)
Quick Thoughts on Fringe, Dollhouse, Smallville and Supernatural.
Here we are in a new season of television. Among these quick thoughts you'll also be able to read season premiere reviews on the front page or the links on the side of NFD for the premiere's of Heroes, Flash Foward, and Dollhouse.
Below, you'll find quick thoughts from myself (Phil) and Chris who watch's a couple of different shows that I don't. Chris' quick thoughts will be highlighted in a gray box.
Phil: Fringe
Chris: Dollhouse, Smallville, Supernatural
FRINGE:

'Night of Desirable Objects'
Here we are with the second season, second episode of the new year. As I've expressed many times this year - I love Fringe, it's so friggin' addicting.
This week, Fringe works on bringing more horror elements by creating an episode around a creature born from a human - a creature that feeds on humans. No, this isn't Jennifer's Body - it actually reminds me more of The X-Files. I betcha never heard that one before. Olivia is still recovering from her accident and Peter is spearheading a new investigating front for the Fringe division.
I honestly was hoping for more of an arc related episode, more on the alternate realty with Leonard Nimoy's William Bell. I know we'll eventually get to that but I was kind of surprise that we had a stand alone episode this fast in the season. It's only episode two and we had an episodic instead of a carry over. Even still, I really enjoyed the episode. My favorite scene was when Olivia and Peter where digging through the wall in the basement and when Olivia turned around you saw the head of the creature, it bites on to Olivia's neck and drags her in. That, my friends, was cool. Even cooler, Peter jumped right on in to stop it and save Olivia. If this was a typical horror film, Peter would have left her to die and saved himself. He didn't, which scores brownie points my with enjoyment of the episode.
I'm looking forward to next week.
I don't know about you folks but I'm really excited about the new TV season!
DOLLHOUSE:
'Vows'
Dear lord, Joss really stepped up his game here, didn't he? After the DVD's release of "Epitaph One", I was wondering if we'd be able to keep up the kind of energy he wanted, but he ultimately did not disappoint! Watching what happened to Dr. Saunders ('Whiskey') was a highlight of the show - and I don't just mean because her posterior is very, very beautifully curved, either. She was having a mental breakdown, and it was exciting to see how she dealt with it. Watching Echo take on all those bad guys was also totally worth it! I think Adelle is in for a few suprises the more Paul and Echo work together, and it will make for a fascinating season.
Pity about the ratings, though - the ratings went through the floor. The show barely got a 1.0 in the Fast Track, and that's the lowest the show has ever been. As I understand it, a lot of the Sarah Connor Chronicles fans are boycotting the show, which is a shame since I think the show just found its legs, but I understand why they're bitter. This show won't last long on Fox with ratings this abysmal.
SMALLVILLE:
'Savior'
Amazing! Just amazing A-plot. Lois has been to the future! She's maybe sleeping with Clark, but can't remember? Clark is finally learning to obey his Kryptonian heritage? And of course, Zod - though ... One is curious what was going on with the green lens filters in those sequences. Why don't the Kryptonians have their powers? Why is Zod from the past? I hope they explain what the heck is going on with Zod and why he took over Lex Luthor's mansion for no readily apparent reason soon, because that entire sequence felt forced.
Even still, the writers are gearing up with Zod, the coming of Metallo, and Lois and Clark's relationship, so I'm excited to see where this show is going! This was the best season premiere they've had, period, end of story. The new producers have earned my respect again, let's hope they don't drop the ball like they did last year.
SUPERNATURAL:
'Free to be You and Me'
At the risk of repeating myself - has everybody suddenly realized that this is the year for awesome television!? Supernatural really pounded home the point that Sam has been a very, very bad boy, and he's about to be a lot badder. Sam is the true and only vessel of Lucifer!? I admit, I saw it coming ,but even still, the long-term planning on this show is simply miraculous and amazing.
And from Dean's side of things, it's nice to see the boy finally enjoying himself. He's really enjoying Castiel's utter lack of understanding humanity, and even seems to be giving in to being partnered with an angel. Though his comments about being worried about Sam indicate bad things for the brothers in the future - I'll be very, very interested to see if this show turns out like Babylon 5 - with two humans going "STOP MESSING WITH OUR REALITY AND GET THE HELL OUT!!" That seems to be what the show is leaning towards.
This is the big last season, so let's see it go out with style.

looking forward to Smallville. Good to know that it’s opening episode is good.
I liked the season premiere of Fringe except for the end. That was just stupid in comparison with the rest of the episode. There was no time for a body swap even if it didn’t die in nurse form.
Smallville is fully awesome but is at its lowest ratings yet. I keep hoping people will follow it…
