Heroes season 4 premiere review

Spoilers for Heroes season four premiere.

It's no secret that I've not been looking forward to the new season of Heroes. The last couple of years have been, well honestly, shitty. Sure, it had its up moments but overall the quality of Heroes dropped big time from its amazing and impressive first season. One of the biggest problems I felt this series had was that it need a downsized cast - it needs to be tighter in story telling and that means we need to get rid of some cast members or take some regular cast members and turn them into only recurring characters. So here we are in a new season. Everyone on the Heroes team says year four is going to be different and it's going to be so much better than years two and three, ... right, all shows say that. I suppose the good thing to come out of my feelings for Heroes is my lowered expectations because I honestly thought the two hour premiere was pretty good even if I still have my grips about what occurred.

This year or this season title is called Redemption - yada yada. We'll see the Heroes characters trying to redeem themselves from the actions of the last couple of seasons - trying to right wrongs and trying to use their abilities to help those without them.

The premiere episode followed most of the cast, but not all of them; Peter, Claire, Noah, Nathan/Sylar, Matt, Hiro, Ando, and new group of characters that live in a Carnival where central. That right there is something that annoys me to no end - the Carnival characters. Is it really a necessity to have a so called "villain" or group of villains in a television series or just a story in general? Let's look back at the first couple of seasons; The first season dealt with the lead characters dealing with their current circumstances as they discover their abilities with Sylar, the villain, only in the background as a shadow and a plot device. Season two dealt with a new villain, Adam aka Kensei - yes, besides the fact that the season villain was the lamest villain of all-time, the season itself tried to force comic book cliches down our throats designed in jumbled forms of shit. Season three's villain was none other than Peter and Nathan's father then later the US Government, capturing people with abilities. All of it was just forced material with the writers making me feel that they were trying to create a "DRAMA" and I write that in caps because I'm sure they said it like it was a great big idea. As we know, the second and third season of Heroes brought us fans nothing but crap. Why I continue to watch only has to do with the fact that I've already invested so much time into the series I feel like if I stop watching it I've just wasted three to four years. I might as well see that wasted time till the end. What made the first season so impressive was how we saw these characters dealing with their emotions, circumstances, and their daily lives while trying to figure out what they are and what they can do. When we were introduced to specific villains, that's when the series began falling apart.

Since season four is a new chapter to the Heroes story, it basically starts on a clean slate. Peter has his real ability back - not the half-assed shit ability he ended off with in season three which was one of the biggest mistakes of the series to date. Claire is back to being a normal girl going to college. Noah is dealing with the loss of his family while trying to rebuild "The Company" to keep us safe from those who threaten the world with their abilities. Hiro and Ando are back in Japan being dorks as usual but also dealing with the fact that Hiro is dying and his abilities are glitching. All of that in the season premiere worked so well and I honestly loved it. I loved that Peter was an EMT again trying to save lives by using his Empathic abilities - nothing more, nothing less. He's just doing his part, using what he has for good. He's not in some kind of epic struggle to save the world from some lame big baddie. I really enjoyed watching Claire, after all she's been through, trying to live her life in college. Her ability which seems so natural for her now after all this time wasn't exploited in the episode, but now was revealed to her new friend which apparently is a lesbian love interest, at least that's what I'm hearing. As for some of the rest, so on and so forth.

What I did dislike are the two stories that are directly related - Nathan/Sylar and Matt Parkman. Honestly, I'd rather not see anything with those characters. Enough already with Nathan and his mother. I didn't like, upon reflection, how Matt used his ability to make Sylar into Nathan. No, not because it was morally wrong because it was stupid. Now we get to deal with Matt's emotions and life after that. The only thing that I found worth out of Matt's story was the scene when he used a Jedi mind trick on the water boy to never come back to his house again.

With all that said nothing spectacular or major happened in the season premiere that I found cool or interesting. The premiere is pretty good only because of the Peter and Claire storyline which also included Noah. I hope the season could capitalize on that but I doubt it will. I only see this show getting worse throughout the season but I'll still watch it because I have no choice but to make myself to suffer.

At least Hayden Panettiere and Ali Larter are super-hot. That keeps me going.

Well i think i went off this show because 1.Sylar is just over used. 2.Killing off characters just for the shock value (which was never infact shocking) and 3.introducing characters just to kill off 2 or 3 episodes down the line was done far to often (which is really the same point as 2.Heroes did have some really good guest acters but other than Kristen Bell were poorly used and killing of Kristen bell’s character was a BIG mistake.

Heroes could never really match it’s first year and never will.

I agree with Dreadtech - very few things can save a show that’s made THIS MANY horrendous mistakes.
