Flash Forward season premiere review

Spoilers for Flash Forward series premiere.

I've never been a big David Goyer fan. I don't dislike him but fans of the work he's been involved in are a little big confused into what he's actually done. Goyer, honestly, is not a very good writer and not a very good director. What he does do very well is coming up with great concepts for films and television, for example; Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Both films he had a big hand in story but little hand in screenplay although he did chip in. Blade on the other hand was written by Goyer and in my opinion is the only film that he's written that is good or rather that I like. If you look at his IMDB profile you'll see that he has in fact been involved in a lot of cool projects but he's only been one part of those projects. The films he's been solely involved in as writer and director haven't been that good, for example; Blade Trinity and The Unborn. All that said, he's still an important part of the projects he's been involved in - my point, he shouldn't do them alone; he should continue to contribute with a group of writers, story tellers, and directors because that's when we see some great work. As time goes on, he could become a better director and he has directed a couple of episodes of Flash Forward, so lets see how those turn out.

Before this past Thursday, Flash Forward was released on the Internet, however, I didn't watch it because I wanted to watch the actual premiere episode. I don't know if anything was different but that's not important. What is important is my first impressions of this brand new series by David Goyer and Brannon Braga. Before I even get to what the show is about and my first thoughts on it, the pilot episode of Flash Forward must have really pleased the creators because the pilot won the 8 o'clock hour with 12.41 million viewers and a 4.1 rating for ABC. Will that stay solid as the first season continues? If the quality of story telling says anything about the series future, I'd like to think people will continue to tune in because Flash Forward is pretty damn awesome!

"Based on the sci-fi novel by Robert J. Sawyer, this series follows the repercussions of a cataclysmic event that knocks out the entire population of the world for two minutes and 17 seconds at the same time, allowing everyone to see several months into their own futures. The series main focus is on a group of characters determined to figure out how and why this unprecedented event took place and how they might be able to change their unsettling futures." [IMDB]

Flash Forward stars Joseph Fiennes, John Cho, Courtney B. Vance, Brian F. O'Byrne, Jack Davenport, Dominic Monaghan, Sonya Walger (who's super hot), and so many others who we'll see during the course of the season.

In short, I'm really pumped to see more of Flash Forward. The opening episode, only an hour episode, really set things up in an exciting way. The episode starts off at the moment the "event" ends and people started waking up, then jumps back a few hours. A lot of the things that happen in Flash Forward is actually very predictable, meaning that there wasn't that much mystery involved in the character stories. That of course doesn't involve the mystery of the main plot itself, the Flash Forward event. It's predictability of characters, things that happen to them during the episode,  in fact didn't diminish what I thought of the pilot, it actually made the pilot more fun because for once I didn't have to deal with the hard mystery of a story like LOST or Battlestar Galactica. For example, without trying to give away too much spoilers; I thought it was predictable when Sonya Walger's character talks about sleeping with another man. A few minutes later a man shows up to see his child, the child Walger's character saved and is taking care of - the moment he walked into the room without seeing his face yet, I thought "that's her future lover". I can say more about the predictability of the pilot, ... Come to think of it, as I'm writing this, maybe being predictable is the point because we saw six months into the future. I suppose it's open to interpretation by you folks who saw it.

I'm excited to watch the unraveling of this mystery but I'm also worried that the series could take a turn for the worse creatively because how many seasons can we see based off of a two minute event? The visions of that event will be fulfilled, possibly, in six months - the end of the season. I hope to god that we don't get a five year series that only sees six months of the story because that will become extremely tedious and annoying. Although I don't know what will happen I'm concerned but I'm also excited since I really enjoyed the pilot.

Flash Forward is a cool edition to my television line-up and granted I don't know if the quality will continue I hope it does because I'd like to continue watching this series, learning new things about the characters introduced to us, find out what happens to John Cho's character since his future could be very interesting, and to see more Sonya Walger because she's super hot and it's nice to see she finally has a regular role on a TV series.
