Dollhouse season 2 premiere review

Spoilers for Dollhouse season two premiere.

Last season, Dollhouse was a pleasure to view on Friday nights along side Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles which was one of my favorite TV series from the last couple of years. Sadly, however, TSCC has been canceled as you're all aware but Dollhouse returns for a second season, a season which is said to be all Joss Whedon and less FOX, ... until they cancel it at the end of the 13 episode run. Just as a side note before I talk about the premiere, the season premiere of Dollhouse bombed in the ratings and only achieved a 1.0 which is garbage as is a big decrease from last season. The match-up with TSCC and Dollhouse obviously worked well together but FOX would never see that because they're assholes. With its 1.0 rating, I'm willing to bet that Dollhouse is already on its way out especially since Stargate Universe is probably going to steal network viewers. Rest assured, Dollhouse will more than likely kick ass in DVR and Internet viewings because that's what is happening now that we're in the digital age.

Some of you may have not seen the extra DVD only episode Epitaph One, to your own disadvantage, but if you have seen it and consider it the season one finale, you're aware that it was so far the best episode of the season and a very big way to end the first year. Although taking place in a totally different time, the future, what we saw was hinted at in the season premiere. The only reason I mention this is because if you haven't seen Epitaph One, your missing out on a lot of special subtleties that I think you need to see to understand.

The season premiere takes place soon after the event with Alpha (Alan Tudyk); Echo has been totally erased and is back to her regular engagements, Paul Ballard is now apart of the Dollhouse, Boyd Langton seems settled in as head of security, Dr. Saunders aka Whiskey is dealing with the revelation that she's only an implanted program in a body, Topher is stressing out and is over worked, Adelle DeWitt has a sexy new short hair cut, and the rest of the cast is just doing their thing. Guest starring in the season premiere is Jamie Bamber, Lee "Apollo" Adama from Battlestar Galactica, who plays an arms dealer that Paul hires Echo to help investigate and expose.

It's said that the new season of Dollhouse is on a lower budget, one of the reasons why it's been renewed, yet Joss Whedon who directed the premiere made it look like a $3 million dollar episode. The sets, action, and the talent must have been money but Whedon must be that good of a director that he knows how to shoot and direct the show in a cheap way. It could be, on the other hand, that the premiere had a larger budget compared to the rest of the season for the reason alone that it's the premiere and premiere's are supposed to be big, at least in my opinion. What an episode! Really! It was fantastic and is probably my favorite premiere of this season so far, at least until LOST premiere's.

A couple of things I want to point out; I love watching Jamie Bamber as a villain. He had that old style British villain way about him - polite yet very violent when needed but what made that so awesome is his violence was his undoing because he glitched Echo who'd remember how bad-ass she is when she remembered her Kung-Fu or whatever personality. I also love that fact that Paul Ballard is now apart of the Dollhouse because, ... well, simply because Helo kicks ass and he needed a more central role. The best thing done in the episode, at least what I enjoyed the most, was the Topher and Whiskey scene in Topher's bed room. Yes, Amy Acker is super hot and sexy in the scene but the dialog and conversation they had in the scene was touching, sad, and I suppose painful. It's too bad that Amy Acker isn't a regular character - she has another series she's working on but she'll be back for a couple of episodes. She's an important part to the series and I'd hate to see her character disappear due to union television rules.

The ending topped off the episode and set the tone of the season when Paul talks to Echo while she's in her Doll state and she reveals that she remembers everything. Totally AWESOME! She's officially a TV character bad-ass - she's a super weapon now and I can't wait to see how things turn out.

Also, just as a quick note, we see Sierra and Victor who are connected romantically even in their Doll state. That's obvious with the smiling, the touching of the face and finally the holding of hands which nobody seemed to notice.

There's cool stuff ahead for the series and I'm pumped to see it. I can't wait for next week.

I’m glad they didn’t spend much time playing catch up. Hoping to slap the right glitch out of her was an iffy play, but over all a good start to the season.
