Superman/Batman: Public Enemies review

Beware of spoilers.

It was an out of the blue thing that I saw Superman/Batman: Public Enemies. I hadn't planned on seeing it but lately I've been on a buzz with Batman: The Animated Series and recently Batman Arkham Asylum both of which are incredible. Knowing that the voice actor from Batman: TAS and Arkham Asylum, Kevin Conroy, and the original Superman voice actor Tim Daly were starring I figured what the hell. Before I even review it, I can tell you that I'm glad I watched it - this is a great movie that's full of superheroes, not just The Man of Steel and The Dark Knight. If your a fan of the past animated series for both Batman and Superman and if your a fan of comic book heroes in general, you'll enjoy this.

Admittedly, I'm not an authority on comic book heroes. I didn't read that many comics when I was younger - I'm a movie guy and that's what I've always been. Lately, however, especially with all the comic book films coming out, I'm starting to regret that I wasn't a comic book reader because I'm missing out on a lot of the characters in not only this film but many different properties. Even still, some might consider my position envious because I'm starting to discover these characters for the first time as if they're brand new. Yes, I'm experiencing some of these heroes for the first time and I'm loving every minute of it. This may actually force me to go back and watch some of the older animated series.

"'No one is above the law.' (President Lex Luthor) A desperate solution for a troubled country: Lex Luthor for President with the Justice League in the service of the government. Only Batman and Superman stand against the new regime - and their disloyalty proves to be exactly what Luthor intended. Using their outcast status to instigate a scandal against Superman, Luthor finally tastes a victory in his vendetta against the Man of Steel. From Executive Producer Bruce Timm and voiced by the cast from both hit Batman and Superman animated TV series including Kevin Conroy, Tim Daly and Clancy Brown, this DC Universe Original Animated Movie of Jeph Loeb and Ed McGuinness's popular graphic novel seethes with political intrigue and action-packed battles between heroes all believing they're on the right side of the law." [Amazon]

Both Superman and Batman have always been my two favorite superheroes - directly because of Christopher Reeve and Michael Keaton. Again, I'm a movie guy. We've moved on since then and still because of Brandon Routh and Christian Bale, Superman and Batman are still my favorite two superheroes. The thing that I've always loved about these characters which is shown in this film is their ideals, the way the work and how it forms an unstoppable team in the hero world. Superman's fierce devotion to all things good and right, freedom and justice, the good cop if you will. Batman, the great detective, is all bad-ass ninja style with nothing stopping him, not even the law. Public Enemies work these character traits and uses them well enough to create great chemistry between the two characters. Yes, even animated characters need good chemistry and because of this movie, I want a Superman/Batman live-action film more than ever now. Just seeing these two work together makes this concept worth it. What makes this film great is just that, watching Superman and Batman working together causing violence among a shit load of other superheroes. The two fight throughout most of the film kicking the crap out of all of DC and it's friggin' amazing. Batman broods, Superman flies and everyone else gets punched in the face.

The draw back to all of this is the story. Lex Luthor is President of the United States and he turns all of the Justice League against Superman and Batman. I may not be a prop at DC comic but I don't and I'll never buy that. Even still, the story is just a plot device to both heroes beating the crap out of everyone else. Lex Luthor, as a matter of fact, is always brilliantly played by Clancy Brown. If you don't recognize the name you'll recognize the face from films like Highlander and Starship Troopers. Out of every person that plays Luthor in animation or live-action, nobody carries the weight like Clancy Brown. Seriously, they should have shaved his head and had him play Luthor in Superman Returns over Kevin Spacey. It's that voice - it's says "I'm bad-ass, evil, and super-rich."

These are just a few of the things that make this film so much fun to watch. I also have to mention; I don't care what you think but Power Girl is my new favorite superhottie for one reason. The animators animated her with the biggest boobs in DC. Thanks guys, you've made me obsessed with an animated character and made me sicker than I was already. Lets look at an over the top photo from deviantART below depicting Power Girl and her orbs of justice and delight.

Anyone who's a fan of superheroes and who were and are fans of the animated television series will definitely enjoy watching Superman/Batman: Public Enemies for the sole reason that it's really damn fun watching The Man of Steel and The Dark Knight take on EVERYONE! Based on that, the hotness of Power Girl and the mediocre story, this direct to DVD animated film scores a solid 7 out of 10 and is indeed recommended.
