True Blood season 2 review

Beware of spoilers for True Blood.

True Blood has become a total hit for HBO and for good reason too. The second season was some of the best that television could offer as it made a rebound from the lackluster first season. As I go back to the first season, some of you may have read my thoughts on it already in past posts; I wasn't keen on the first season, in fact, I thought it wasn't a very good show at all even though it gave me little reasons to stay week after week. Although it had enough intrigue, I found characters to be over-the-top, boring, annoying, and several other terms that I can continue to use. On the other hand, the Vampires at least weren't cliche as say something like Twilight. The character Bill Compton in particular became a favorite of mine in the first season because of an interesting back story and wasn't the cliche, long-haired, European we see so many times in so many movies that try to make Vampires "cool" for lack of a better term. He's a good'ol'boy from the South which is different. I thought the overall plot and motivation for the season was wasted and simply stupid, but now after seeing the full second season, season one seemed more like a set up than anything else, a set up I personally could go without ever seeing again.

The season two finale of True Blood, although not breaking records with its 5.114 million finale viewers, closes a chapter on the season arcs while setting up new arcs for season three which already has been greenlit. The season started off where the first season ended, seeing the dead woman in the parking lot at Merlots. That storyline which kicked off the season continued throughout until the end. Most of the season also followed our two leads heading to Dallas dealing with Vampire issues which also paralleled with another characters story. I'm sure you all know what characters I'm speaking of - if you don't; A) why are you reading this and B) go watch the second season. In trying to keep this short and manageable, I'll just touch on a few plot points that I thought were great during the course of the season and also quickly talk about the season finale.

The best thing about season two was the search and aftermath of the Godric storyline. That story involved a lot of screen time for Eric played by Alexander Skarsgard; we saw some back story of when he was a Viking and we saw a very vunerable side of him because of Godric's fate. The story leading up to that - Sookie and Bill in Dallas, and Fellowship of the Sun story which followed Jason, turned out to be very entertaining, fun, and exciting. Everything about it was all told so well. It actually reminded me of how the first season of Heroes was - everything about an episode made waiting for next week hard because you simply wanted more. The MaryAnn story line, which also was the focus of the season finale, also brought in a lot of fun during the season - it was all party, orgies, and ecstacy which turned out to be something of the source to her evil powers. To put it short, everything leading up to the finale was fantastic with most of my favorite scenes, moments and episodes focusing on the Vampire part of the story which includes Godric, Eric and Lorena who I hope returns for more episodes next season. Also, Jessica is a fun character that ended the season in an interesting fashion.

The season finale, although was set up in an amazing way, I have to say; granted the finale is very good it's also kind of disappointing. The story of the finale focuses on the destruction of MaryAnn and her evil ways but I'm someone that when I see a finale or a premiere, it has to pop in excitement - it has to be big as if made for the big screen, for example although I'm not trying to compare; Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and Battlestar Galactica both had epic finales, granted they were series finales. That's how seasons should finish, at least in my opinion. Nothing happened in this that made me think "wow" or "I can't wait until next year" and that's surprising considering how much I loved this year. The only thing I feel is even worth mentioning is the fate of Eggs, which actually pissed me off because I've really enjoyed that character, however, if you remember the actor Mehcad Brooks was a guest actor during the first season of Dollhouse starring Eliza Dushku. Now that Eggs is dead, maybe he can come back and Joss Whedon can capitalize on True Blood's and Brooks' popularity from the Eggs character. He is an Active in the series after all - they could do a lot with the character.

The disappointing season finale doesn't change my opinion of season two. It was a great year and I do look forward to season three but everything that set up season three leaves me thinking only one thing - "meh". Even so, if the rumors are true about next year it should be a whole lot of fun. All I have to say about season three is Werewolves.
