Another Frank Miller comic may be filmed - Ronin
Sylvain White, director of Stomp the Yard, is pushing hard to develop another Frank Miller comic, Ronin, as a motion picture. I've never had the pleasure of reading this book, but most of Frank's work is pretty stellar.
The basic synopsis was given as:
Miller's Ronin, which began publication in 1983, takes place in a dystopic near-future New York in which a ronin—a rogue samurai warrior from feudal Japan—is reincarnated.
And I have to say, I love dystopian pictures, though I doubt they'll do 1983 again so soon after Watchmen. The director is quoted as saying that it won't be a frame-by-frame mock-up like some of Watchmen and Sin City were. Sylvain states that it was one of Frank's earlier works, and may need some streamlining and changes to survive adaptation to the big screen.
This is fine with me - I know a lot of you out there probably hate it when someone botches source material from a book or a comic, but most books read, bare minimum, like three hour movies, if not longer. There's so much passion and no budget constraints to a book, it's just not the same when making a film. Besides, you want to make changes, because when a movie is a shot-for-shot remake of a graphic novel or even just a novel, you already know what's going to happen. As much as audiences claim they'd like to see someone's works put up on the big screen faithfully, there's no surprise there, no intrinsic value, you're just remaking a story across two mediums.
