Todd McFarlane says more animated SPAWN!
I've said before that I've never been a comic book reader. My first exposure to the Spawn character was from the HBO series in which Spawn was voiced by Keith David. That series gave me a new experience to animated films because of how dark and violent it was - mind you in 1997 I was 14 years old and in the 90s, dark and gritty wasn't the norm as it is now. I loved it, and that pretty much goes without saying, however, the live-action film, granted I like it, wasn't exactly what I was hoping for out of this character.
Creator Todd McFarlane for a long time has been trying very hard to get another live-action film in theaters with a proper R-rating but just before the weekend, he wrote on his Twitter that the animated series will return!
"Animation: For those that've asked, the SPAWN ANIMATED show will be back in Hollywood's face in 2010," he said. "Legal issues delayed it past few years."
The original Spawn series ran 18 episodes from 1997-1999. According to Wikipdia.org the new series, Spawn: The Animation, will have Keith David returning as the title character. The legal issues he mentions in his Twitter post have apparently been "resolved and the rights will then be reverting back to Todd McFarlane, the director, by the end of this year." He also intends to try and get the series back to HBO "because they gave him a 'big break' when he first started with his Spawn animations."
It's been a very long time since I've seen the animated series. I just recently saw the box set at Best Buy when I was randomly shopping for some DVDs... but I didn't buy it because I'm an idiot. I had it in my hand too. I will eventually pick it up and rewatch the series. My hope with the new animated series is McFarlane can keep the same style and violence that came with the earlier show. In general, I wish HBO would bring back or create new animated shows because some of the animated shows back in the 90s kicked ass.
