Rambo 5 is official!

Some of the most satisfying sequels the last few years have come from Sylvester Stallone with Rocky Balboa and Rambo.  The reviews for the last Rambo film were mixed to say the least, but from this blogger, I loved the last film for many different reasons.

Since the release of Rambo, rumors have circulated the Internet on when or if a fifth Rambo film will be made, however, nobody knew for sure even Stallone himself who flipped-flopped on yes and no.  Today, however, is different because Rambo 5 has officially been greenlit by the studio.

"Nu Image/Millennium Films has greenlit the franchise's fifth installment, with Sylvester Stallone starring and directing, repeating his duties from 2008's 'Rambo'," reports Variety.  "The upcoming project's storyline revolves around Rambo fighting his way through human traffickers and drug lords to rescue a young girl abducted near the U.S.-Mexico border.  Production will start in the spring."

The rumors of that type of storyline has indeed been known in part - in fact, I believe that was originally going to be the story of Rambo 4.

Some folks who love this franchise haven't been hot on the idea of another Rambo film believing that the last film was an excellent cap for the franchise - John Rambo coming full circle ending the film by returning home, a place he's avoided since the 80's.  I can't argue with those feelings because they're right, however, Stallone has proved that he's perfectly capable of continuing his excellence in the filmmaking industry. In short, I have confidence in his abilities so I'm not fearing a sequel - I'm excited for it.

Currently, Stallone is working on post-production on his new film The Expendables which will premiere in theaters April 23, 2010.  With production reported starting in the spring for Rambo 5, I'm assuming Stallone will immediately begin his work on the sequel.
