Further rumors on the return of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Update:  Thomas Dekker (John Connor) confirms that there were and currently is talks about a DVD film.  A post about it has been made if you want to see the full story.

A couple of weeks ago, I put up a post that spoke about the rumored return of Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles in a possible DVD movie taking place after the final scene or soon after of the second season (which you can see just above).

Just before the weekend, more news on that very rumor had hit the net via SaveTheSCC.com hinting that the first report (although not mentioned) was accurate, at least as far as we the reader can tell.

"We've been incredibly fortunate enough to have received a few tidbits from a trusted source who asked to remain unnamed," said the site.  "A division of Warner Bros. Entertainment called Warner Premiere, which deals in direct-to-DVD entertainment, has been 'seriously considering' a follow-up movie to The Sarah Connor Chronicles.  However, the recent legal issues with The Halcyon Company has caused some hesitation."

That legal issue with Halcyon goes as follows: Terminator owners, Derek Anderson and Victor Kubicek, have filed lawsuits; "One against Santa Barbara hedge fund Pacificor, which lent them money to buy the rights to the science-fiction film series, and another against a former employee of Pacificor who helped arrange the loans." [LA Times]

To interpret, Anderson and Kubicek were in over their heads, help ruin the Terminator film franchise by making bad decisions hiring McG to direct and the Catwoman idiots, John Brancato and Michael Ferris, to write the film.  On top of that, they borrowed and borrowed and are getting bitten in the ass for it - long story short, this is not the only lawsuit they've been involved with during their short three years as producers.

As far as I know, however, film rights are different than television and DVD rights, meaning the latter may still be in the hands of Warner's and not in dispute but I'm not clear on those details.  Notice the quote from the LA Times only mentions "rights to the science-fiction film series", not the television series.

Continuing with the Sarah Connor story; "What does that mean?" asks SaveTheSCC.com.

They answer by saying, "It means they need a little encouragement.  A sign that there's a market here, that there's money to be made, and that yes, this is the right thing, WB, you're doing the right thing."

Make no mistake about it folks, there is a "market" for The Sarah Connor Chronicles.  People would have rather seen more from this series than the garbage McG gave us, at least the direct SCC audience which is a loyal group.

Consider this; Stargate: The Ark of Truth and Stargate: Continuum were both direct to DVD films that cost around $7 million each, more than double an episode cost.  The sales for both DVDs did well for MGM - According to Wikipedia, Stargate: The Ark of Truth numbers: "The DVD release of Stargate: The Ark of Truth in the U.S. earned MGM/Fox US $1.59 million in rentals in the first week after the release, and another US $1.38 million in rentals in the second week. In its third week it earned US $1.19 million in rentals totaling US $4.16 million . The DVD has also earned US $9.0 million in sales."

The report for Stargate: Continuum isn't as accurate but according to the site, in the United States alone, DVD sales were over $8 million.

The studio, as you can imagine, called for a third film that has yet to enter principle photography (it's definitely happening but unknown when).  Stargate SG-1, the series run on the then SciFi Channel, had between 2-3.5 million viewers through 2002-2007.

Now with those numbers I gave you for Stargate SG-1 and it's direct to DVD movies, compare them with the numbers for Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and you'll see that, yea, there's plenty of money to be made.  Do you know why?  Although considered to be a "network failure", TSCC's finale episode for season two had just over 3.5 million viewers with between a 30% and 40% rise in 7 day DVR viewing and that also goes for the rest of season two as it was between 2.7 and 3.7 million viewers during the second half till the season finale.  I think it's also VERY important to mention the the first half of season two, when still airing on Monday nights, ended its first half with over 5 million viewers.  Overall, the Monday night airings scored between 4.7 and 6.3 million viewers for the first half.  Those numbers, if you need further proof can be found at TV By The Numbers, but mind you it took me forever to go through their Terminator posts to find the weekly numbers - their site, although great, wasn't easy to navigate for this series.

The point I'm trying to make folks, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles has a huge fanbase that will generate cash for Warner Bros., for not just one direct to DVD but several because WE LOVE TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES!

It's not our fault that it was canceled - what can science fiction fans say; we live in the digital age, Nielsen is obsolete and we, although against "mainstream" opinions, do have lives and go out Friday nights like everybody else.

Now, while I wrap up this post, I should make it known that the story is not confirmed and as of now can only be considered a rumor, but I hope my argument on why TSCC is still profitable by simple research on Wikipedia and TV By The Numbers is enough to show fans and others, that this series is indeed profitable on a small budget.  For a two hour direct to DVD picture, costing between $5 and $7 million written by those who care about the characters and where they end up, will be a win not only for the studio but for us fans.

Sadly, this story by SaveTheSCC.com and the very first report by Lanie Grace has somewhat been under the radar.  I suggest to you, fans of the show, spread the word and let people know because it's important.  It's either that or the Terminator DVD you'll end up watching is McG's crapfest which I consider this years summer disaster.

Spread the word!! More TSCC!

Thanks for posting this, man. Always good to spread the word amongst those who love the show. I’m good friends with one of the associates of SavetheSCC so I always try to encourage people to spread the news.

One can only hope this is true.

Thomas Dekker himself has now confirmed this in an interview released today. He says there is a straight to DVD Movie being planned. The Terminatorwiki is buzzing all about it.

Believe it or not there are ones over basically saying Dekker is wrong!

    @LanieGrace

i09.com is also reporting a similiar story and keep in mind that Josh Friedman is a guest blogger there, so this must be true. I don’t understand why it is that people (Terminator Wiki) can’t stand the fact that you broke it first.

Typically things can change unexpectedly. It would depend how things will turn out.
You got to admit The Sarah Connor chronicles as an alternate time-line is a good concept.

Perhaps they should had done a miniseries as a follow up.

anyways I personally think any screenplay written by McG, should be crammed up where the sun never shines.

McG doesn’t write, he just directs. Remember, if you hated Terminator Salvation, blame the rightful people, the Catwoman people, Brancato and Ferris. McG did the best with what he was given by the studio.

Oh and Lanie - thanks for the link, by the way, that was kick ass to read. I hope we (the fans) get this project going!

@ Soran, granted the writers are terrible but I SOO disagree with you about McG. McG is a terrible director and Terminator Salvation was a disaster because of his direction. He can’t direct actors, he can’t convey a narrative, he had no idea what direction he wanted to take the franchise, all he did was tread on James Cameron, using “nods” to Cameron’s film and then called it “cool.” That’s just for starters.

Who cares anyways, this is about TSCC not McG.

@ Lanie, thanks for the link! I’ll write a post up as soon as I can.

@ Transport 54, in short, the folks at the Wiki are honestly assholes. I’ve seen the things they’ve said about her and it’s sad. I’m not a member there and I can’t speak for everyone, but some of the folks here are just ruthless towards Lanie. It’s unfortunate. Even if she was full of crap, which she’s not, most people would just ignore her but she’s like a threat… at least in their eyes, for reasons unknown.

  • Soran said:

@Phil - I disagree with that somewhat, though he’s certainly not the best director, I think Salvation’s failing wasn’t in the directing. But to each their own :)

TSCC For the Win - I’m loving the idea of seeing how it would’ve ended!
