BioShock gets a new Director

As you all know, supposedly Gore Verbinski has pulled back from a motion picture version of BioShock to concentrate more on Clue, Heavy Metal, and possibly more Pirates movies. He still has a passion for the franchise, apparently, but he just doesn't have time to direct, so he's going to Produce it now, states Sci-Fi Wire.

So who's been hired to direct it? 28 Weeks Later director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. In this case, this does not inspire me with confidence. BioShock had a certain epic feel that I think Gore Verbinski captured perfectly in his Pirates movies. The 28... Later franchise was not my favorite set of films visually or plot-wise, though I'm sure the plot of the BioShock movie will depend on the writer, not him. The man only has one major Hollywood film under his belt, and they're pitting him against one of the most popular games of 2008?

This doesn't seem wise - I'm a huge fan of Gore Verbinski's visual styles, and his ability to frame characters in interesting ways, I thought he was perfect for the weird world of BioShock. Still, perhaps as a producer he will guide the film in a way that will still make it amazing to look at.
