Warren Ellis writing an Excalibur remake??

As it stands in my favorite movies list, John Boorman's Excalibur is my all-time favorite fantasy film; yes, more so than Lord of the Rings.  My love for this film has nothing to do with the scale or production value as no film can compete with LOTR, however, Excalibur brings fond memories from when I was young and when I was introduced to epic fantasy.  It was so influential to me as a kid that no other film that involved the Arthurian Legend has ever worked because as far as I'm concerned, Nigel Terry is King Arthur (not literally of course, I'm not nuts).  The cast for this film is a legend in itself with Terry as Arther, Nicol Williamson as Merlin, Helen Mirren as Morgana, Nicholas Clay as Lancelot, Patrick Stewart as Leondegrance, Cherie Lunghi as Guenevere, Liam Neeson as Gawain, and Gabriel Byrne as Uther Pendragon.  That cast alone constitutes the UK All-Star team.

Over at Warren Ellis' official website he writes, "I'm writing a film treatment for Hollywood Gang, who co-produced Frank Miller's 300."

"On my desk, the treatment is called Untitled Arthurian Project," he said.  "On their desk, the project is called Excalibur."  On the site, the word Excalibur is the color red linking to wikipedia's entry of John Boorman's film.

He then tells Ain't It Cool News that the "Untitled Arthurian Project, as I call it (just so I can't feel John Boorman's Excalibur looming down at me from my DVD shelf), differs from the prior 751 King Arthur movies in many ways, but perhaps most obviously in that it is very specifically about the gathering of the Knights."

Am I upset at the prospect of a remake?  No, not really - it's not like I didn't expect it, but it will have to be something incredible for me to like.  I've like films about the Arthurian Legends for a long time, and I've seen many movies about it, but none of them ever satisfied me like Excalibur did.  That means, Ellis and his draft is a long shot for being anything near to the level of John Boorman's flick.
