Ridley Scott to direct ALIEN prequel!!

This story can go in the "holy shit, this is amazing" category.

After about a month or so, the proposed Alien prequel finally has a director and it's not Carl Erik Rinsch who was rumored to direct. The director, confirmed by Variety, is the original 1979 motion picture director, the one, the only, Ridley Scott.

"The studio has hired Jon Spaihts to write a prequel that has Ridley Scott attached to return as director," Variety reports. "There were three sequels to Scott's original, but it is the first time the director has set his mind on directing one."

Ridley Scott is one of five directors that I consider my favorite directors - he sits among Steven Spielberg and James Cameron. His original Alien film is of course not just a science fiction master piece but a cinematic master piece and having him come back to direct a new film, even if it's a prequel, is fantastic news which I find very very exciting.

Apparently, what got Scott to jump on board was a pitch from the new writer Jon Spaihts. Variety says, "Spaihts has become a go-to-guy for space thrillers. After Keanu Reeves became attached to his Warner Bros. sci-fi script 'Shadow 19,' Reeves hired Spaihts to write the space journey epic 'Passengers,' which is berthed at Morgan Creek. That script got Spaihts the meeting with Fox and Scott Free, and he won the job with an 'Alien' reboot take that the studio and Scott loved."

It sounds like a lot of new young writers and directors are making their way into the business in a big way. Spaihts, writing an Alien story that a legendary director loved; Joseph Kosinski directs a sequel to Tron; Neill Blomkamp brakes into the business with District 9 which some call the next Blade Runner (ironically another film Scott directed). The point is, or rather the question is, are we starting to see the next generation of Spielbergs, Camerons, and Scotts coming? Who knows but I like what I see so far. Hopefully Spaihts script turns out to be something that brings justice to Scott's original.
