The New Ghostbusters: Who should perform them?

What's this?  Yes, finally, I've written a new article which spawned from a couple of random Phil thoughts.  I'm willing to bet that when your done reading this, your going to hate my opinion on this subject, but I don't care.  Maybe it'll spark your opinions.

I've spoken about Ghostbusters many times during the last several weeks, with news of a third film on the way, the release of the Ghostbusters video game, the release of the Blu-ray, and my quick review of the first Ghostbusters film. The third film, currently in script phase, is a subject movie fans alike continue to discuss, usually asking the question if a third film is either needed, wanted, or if greenlit, could match up to the first film in the franchise. As for my thoughts, it's simple; it is needed, I do want it, but I don't think it will be as good as the first film. What sequel usually is? Sure, some films do out class their predecessor but a majority of time, sequels are inferior to the first film which is the case in so many franchises. However, sequels vs. the first film isn't the point of discussion in this article.

I've been thinking the last two weeks or so, knowing that the next Ghostbusters film would be a "pass the torch" type of film, who could play the new roles being written. It should be noted that I personally don't enjoy "pass the torch" concepts - who cares about the next generation of characters, it's the original that we as movie fans and Ghostbusters fans want to see. Even still, the script is being written and a new team of characters are being created to be mentored by the original Ghostbusters of Peter Venkman (Bill Murray), Ray Stantz (Dan Aykroyd), Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis), and Winston Zeddemore (Ernie Hudson).

Actor Dan Aykroyd has stated to the press a couple of times that he was looking to not only have a new team of Ghostbusters but also introduce one or two possible female characters, with one of those characters being the lead of the newly formed team. In those talks he mention Alyssa Milano who voiced the character Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn in the recent Ghostbusters video game. Also, Dollhouse star Eliza Dushku was mentioned by Aykroyd to play a Ghostbuster, a role I'm assuming is meant to be the lead of the newly formed team, but that's based on Dushku's personality (more on that below).

The first two actors mention, Milano and Dushku, I support, especially since I'm a huge fan of Dushku's Dollhouse, among other reasons. After I quickly discuss those two actors, I'm going to speculate and throw out a couple of names to you on who I see wearing the Ghostbusters uniform. Take note, however, that my choices are based on the assumption that the rest of the new team is three male actors with Dushku as the forth and lead Ghostbuster, and Milano as the scientist character she voiced in the video game.

Alyssa Milano - Dr. Ilyssa Selwyn

Assuming that Milano would be playing the same character in the film as she did in the video game, would work for me. I think it's safe to say that from a guys point of view, Alyssa Milano is a smoking hot actress, but what interests me is the backstory for her character that was established in the video game. I should make clear that just because her character was in the VG doesn't mean I think she should be in the film, however, if they're looking for new young female characters, you might as well use a character that had a new freshly built backstory. You can actually read a little about Selwyn's backstory over at IMDB.

A few adjustments would have be made to the character, especially considering the age of the actress compared to the character. Milano was born in 1972 but the Selwyn character was born in 1961; it's an easy fix but it would also be kind of difficult to explain the character involvement since the game took place in the early 90s - she would be 20 during the events of the game.  On top of that, the character in the game has a relationship with Venkman which I don't see working in the film.  All of this is only assumption - the writers could be doing something completely different with the character; possibly reinventing the character. We won't know for a while but however the character is shaped for the film, Milano gets the thumbs up from me.

Eliza Dushku

If you've ever seen interviews with Dushku you'll know that she has a bravdo, a swagger about her that's sexy and confident. Her personality, which I'm assuming Aykroyd saw as the character, would be used to create a character - possibly having a role written based on the actress. During the 80's, Bill Murray's Peter Venkmen was the face of the Ghostbusters; funny, charming, yet rude, confident, and brash. I can see Dushku playing the equal to that role but more pleasing to the eye for us men. I see her as a strong and brilliant character, however, again, that's all based on the personality that I've seen Dushku show. For all I know, the writers could be making Dushku's character into a big loser that happened to get a major role in the plot.

Say, for argument sake, she did get cast into the film - I'm curious on how that would effect her show Dollhouse which would be shooting for several months out of the year. She's the star of the show and a leave of absence would be totally impossible. She'd have to wait until her hiatus to film this movie. I'd love to see her in this film but I'm not sure if it's even a possibility especially when I don't know the studio's expectations.

The next three actors are just some names I came up with. Each actor has qualities that I think could work in a Ghostbusters film.

Dev Patel

Although his last film Slumdog Millionaire was a critical success which won the Oscar for Best Picture, many mainstream film goers may not actually know who Dev Patel is. I personally don't believe that will be the case within the next few years for a couple of reasons; A) Slumdog Millionaire has been making its rounds among the public in rented form B) Dev Patel is brilliant in the film which means he'll have work, and C) He's playing the villain in The Last Airbender which might have mainstream appeal (that's unknown for now).

Patel, in my opinion and without being insulting to the actor, can pull "dork" off really well. I've never seen any full episodes of the UK TV series he stared in, Skins, but I've seen plenty of clips on Youtube. Below, is an example of Patel being a dork, a quality that I think could add to a characters comedy if in a Ghostbusters film. He also knows how to play drama, which is obvious if you've seen Slumdog. Overall, I can see him in a Ghostbusters uniform - acting like a dork while playing whatever drama is needed to create a character.

Masi Oka

Masi Oka's character on Heroes fast became a fan favorite and also earned him an Emmy nomination for that role. Heroes, sadly, has been declining in quality and Oka's character has been turned into a mockery but I can't put the blame on Oka, he's still cool. Oka, if you didn't know, is in fact a genius outside of his television show. It's reported that Oka's IQ is 180, which means he's "profoundly gifted." The point; genius scientist type character. Maybe Oka would be the new teams Egon. Oka is also very funny. Although I haven't seen most of his work, from what I have seen, Oka can make people laugh. He was especially funny during the first season of Heroes, when the writers actually cared about quality.

He's a very entertaining actor that I think if given the chance would be able to form a great character in the Ghostbusters universe; funny and very brilliant. He can pull off nerd/geek in Heroes, but I'd actually like to see him play a different role - a more serious role more suited to his personality. Maybe, if he's interested, he'd try out for a part in this film.

Shia LaBeouf

Yea, I know, kill me. I'm sure some of you are disgusted with my pick of Shia LaBeouf, adding to the hate of all my picks in this article, but I don't care. The reality - people hate LaBeouf for all the wrong reasons; women love him and he's in major franchise films, some arguably not great films, however, they seem to look past the fact that however the film he was in turned out, he usually was great in them.

Shia LaBeouf is a fantastic actor that has a very bright and successful future ahead of him. Some say he's a young Tom Hanks and I'd have to agree. LaBeouf can play a lot of different roles and emotions - he's becoming a character actor, and he's an actor that I find incredibly gifted. I think he can be very funny, if predictable in some of his comedy ("No" x100 really fast, that kind of stuff), he can handle action, and he can be very dramatic and serious which is proven in some of his movies. Currently, his next film is Wall Street 2 which should be a huge step in the right direction for his career. All of those qualities, I think, is what this film needs to create a cool character that would be entertaining to watch.

I'm sure by now some of you are thinking I'm smoking the funny cigarettes, but these are some of the names that came to mind during the last couple of weeks. Who the writers and producers have in mind to play the roles of the young new team of Ghostbusters is a mystery and that's even if they have anyone in mind at this point early in the process. We still have a long way off to seeing a new Ghostbusters film on screen and there isn't any guarantee that a new film will even be greenlit but until then, we can only speculate.

You'll also notice that my picks don't include the usual - Jack Black, Michael Cera, Seth Rogan, etc.  All for simple reason - they're not particularly funny anymore.  Most of them, especially Jack Black, do the same thing over and over again.  The main reason for my choices above is not because they're comedic actors, it's because they're actors with capable comedic timing, drama skill, and a fitting personality for what I see as characters in a Ghostbusters film.

I'm interested in knowing who'd you pick to play roles in the upcoming Ghostbusters film. Do you agree with any of my picks or do you have your own, actors you wouldn't mind seeing in the sequel?

Good thing you have no say in the film’s casting. Your picks for the male roles are beyond gay, while Milano is too big of a used-up slut to be viewed as a Ghostbuster. Dushku is cool and all but come on “brilliant”? She’s never been apart of anything that was successful, she’s hot not brilliant, don’t confuse the two, mate. This is some of the worst fan-picks I have ever seen on the net and that’s saying alot.

See, the funny thing is, I know for a fact that you’ve never seen any of these actors in one thing they’ve ever done. You know how I know that - BECAUSE I KNOW WHO YOU ARE!! Once again your shooting from the hip without any context - your just saying this because you hate these people for no good reason - it just makes you feel better as you hate people in general.

Now, I know some people who read this site have indeed seen these actors in whatever they’ve done. More than likely they actually have good reasons for why they wouldn’t like these actors and I know that - that’s why I wrote this because I’d like to hear good, thought-out reason why they wouldn’t and who’d they see in the roles.

How many times have I told you not to comment on things when you don’t have any goddamn clue on who the actors are? That would be like me giving reviews on every King of the Hill episode (a show you watch), without ever seeing an episode. Maybe I should start doing that so you know how stupid someone looks.

Get the hell outta here? Next time, I’ll just delete your bullshit. I can only take you serious if you ACTUALLY SAW THEIR WORK! But you haven’t so your comment is null.

    See you at work Monday.

Anyone have any legit reasons why these actors don’t belong in a Ghostbusters film? Or do I have to listen to more, “uhh, because Alyssa Milano is a slut” because if that’s the case, I won’t take your criticism seriously.

I would like to see Shia LaBeouf, Masi Oka in that new movie, I don’t know about Seth rogen and others. As comedic actors, they’re typecast
I don’t know about the actor from Slum dog millionaire, I might have to watch that movie, since I haven’t seen it yet.
    speaking of which . . .
creating a character who is saucy,
funny, charming, rude, confident, and brash, is tough order to fill. But I think it would work on that character as a woman. Long as the writers won’t write her as loser.
Writers these days are a bit hasty when it comes to writing screenplays.

Im going to unfortunately disagree with almost every choice you have up there. And Ill tell you why.

I dont find any of them to be good comedic actors.

If I were picking a comedic team to bust my ghosts and try to keep with the “Spirit” of the Original I would go with the following.

I would like to see Seth Rogan in smart guy role. I think he has some talent locked in there that does not need fart , pot and gay jokes as a staple.

I soundly believe that Vince Vaughn/ Ryan Renolds should be in this picture.

John Krakinski Is another staple that I would add.

I would love to see Simon Pegg or Nick Frost as the (ghost busters from over seas)

Including women as part of the team I would love to consider
    Tina Faye

    Kristin Wiig from SNL

Both hot both play smart sexy women both very funny.
