Quick Thoughts: Warehouse 13 pilot

The summer season is usually void of television shows unlike the winter. It's actually nice because even I sometimes need a break from watching 10 to 15 television shows a week - sometimes it's just to much and if you watch some of the shows I do, your mind gets a work out. The summer is nice because of the break I get, however, I will admit sometimes without anything to watch, I get bored. Thankfully, there are a couple of shows on TV to watch - one being True Blood on HBO and now this new television series which premiered on the SyFy Channel last Tuesday - Warehouse 13.
For the last several months I've heard about Warehouse 13 but I haven't really read anything about it or followed much of the production because, at the time, I didn't care. The concept, honestly, is X-Files in the Indiana Jones warehouse where the Ark of the Covenant is but that doesn't mean it's bad thing, it's just a concept that doesn't seem original - even so, I kinda liked the series pilot although everything about the series premiere is totally cliche. It's cliche as if following a formula in SyFy television shows - Those of you who've seen shows like Flash Gordon, Painkiller Jane, the better shows like Sanctuary, Eureka, etc., will understand what those cliche's are because, lets face it, all are part of those shows. However, it's worth mentioning that those cliche's aren't bad things or downers - they work for the type of show and audience that they're aimed at, for the most part at least. I didn't get a chance to watch the premiere until this past Sunday (Yes networks, some of us don't watch shows live because we have other things to do); I don't even know if I'm going to have the chance to catch tonight's episode but I'll try. Now we have a new original SyFy series; will it match up to what Battlestar Galactica did or will it be a total failure like Flash Gordon was? The short answer, neither - it's a fun quirky SF series that I think might gain a following strong enough to continue the series but it's nothing like BSG and thankfully, it isn't awful as say Painkiller Jane.
"After saving the life of the President, two Secret Service agents find themselves abruptly transferred to Warehouse 13 -- a massive, top-secret storage facility in windswept South Dakota which houses every strange artifact, mysterious relic, fantastical object and supernatural souvenir ever collected by the U.S. government. The Warehouse's caretaker Artie (Saul Rubinek) charges Pete (Eddie McClintock) and Myka (Joanne Kelly) with chasing down reports of supernatural and paranormal activity in search of new objects to cache at the Warehouse, as well as helping him to control the warehouse itself.
McClintock plays Pete Lattimer, a handsome, athletic Secret Service Agent who's impulsive, intuitive nature often leads him to leap before he looks. There is hardly a situation so dire to which he can't find the lighter side.
Kelly portrays Secret Service Agent Myka Bering, a woman born to be an agent. Organized and focused, she believes in hard work, solid planning and steadfast execution. Needless to say, it is an approach that causes conflict with Pete's off-the-cuff style.
Rubinek is Artie Nielsen, a long-time Secret Service Agent who is in charge of Warehouse 13. Enthusiastic about his work, and made a bit "eccentric" by his long tenure in the isolated warehouse, Artie is happy to have Pete and Myka join him in the pursuit of objects that "threaten to ruin the world's day." [Futon Critic]
I've said many times on this site that I'm a sucker for miguffins, historical objects, movies like Indiana Jones, Tomb Raider, and The Librarian, so Warehouse 13 and it's simple concept is obviously the draw to continue watching this series. I'm interested in seeing what object of the week will be introduced to our characters that would lead them on some kind of fun investigation. The only thing I hope doesn't happen is that it doesn't become redundant and we see the same thing happen week after week; episode starts off with an object that needs investigating, Pete and Myka go investigate it with Artie giving them advice, they solve the case. I hope there's a little depth to the characters effecting the show week to week. The pilot introduced a couple of elements to those characters that could potentially be built on; an incident with Myka in Denver which got people killed, and Pete's apparent ability as well as his father who died many years ago. So far, that's all we know about them but we will, more than likely, learn a lot more in the future.
I intended this to actually be a full review on the pilot but now after thinking about it for a couple of days, the pilot, honestly, didn't give me a whole lot to explore. Warehouse 13 is a simple show that was very fun yet very cliche, however, entertaining enough to continue tuning in week to week. I will definitely keep on watching and I will add Warehouse 13 to my weekly Quick Thoughts.

Summer’s great for me, man - I love Burn Notice and Psych, they thrill me during the summer. USA Network really has it going on. If you get time, I strongly suggest you buy season 1 of burn notice or psych and see if you like ‘em, if you haven’t watched them already.
This pilot was very entertaining, very engaging, without going too far over the top. I liked the trinkets, I like the concept, and I enjoyed the execution. Of *course* the lead woman is STUNNINGLY beautiful and has great legs (and everything else, that opening scene had me drooling), because to appeal to SciFi junkies, you gotta have a hottie. And the male lead is funny as heck, SyFy has a very good ability to find funny leads. I like character Saul Rubinek played too, he was mysterious without being a total jerkwad. I think this show has a lot of potential, and I’m looking forward to more.
I haven’t seen warehoues 13 as of yet. There’s a good chance that the writers would screw something up along the way.
From what I read, writing a tv show is like making a soup. add the ingredients together.
I thought the pilot was okay. I’ll give another three episodes to see if it hooks me.
