Yesterdays Movies on Tuesday: The Wild Women of Wongo (1958)

A couple of weeks ago, I found this 100 pack of old science fiction movies, B-movies ranging from the 1940s to the 90s. I picked it up and looked at the back seeing what movies this DVD pack had to offer guessing that some of the movies that I've seen were on it, however, as it turns out every single movie in the pack I've never seen before. ;I considered putting it down but the price tag of $14 bucks was to awesome to pass up, so I bought it. I figured it would be a fun opportunity to look back at some of the most ridiculous movies of all time and now after watching my first one, I couldn't be anymore happier with my purchase.

After looking through the selection, The Wild Women of Wongo caught my eye; the title alone is amazing. Now after seeing it, I'm trying to remember what I thought I'd expect from an old film like this but to be honest, so fresh after the viewing, my mind has gone numb. This is quite possibly the most ridiculous film I've ever seen and before you go on a say, "but Phil, this was made in the 50s." Yea, so was Ben-Hur. It doesn't matter what time it was made in - there is no excuses for really bad and ridiculous movies. Even the 50s had their garbage but no one can deny the awesome enjoyment one can get from an original B-movie, especially me since I have a thing for guilty pleasures.

"On the tropical island of Wongo, a tribe of beautiful women discover that the other side of the island is inhabited by a tribe of handsome men. They also discover that a tribe of evil ape men live on the island, too, and the ape men are planning a raid on the tribe in order to capture mates." [IMDB] Written by Cedric Rutherford, The Wild Women of Wongo is directed by James L. Wolcott and stars Jean Hawkshaw as Omoo, Mary Ann Webb as Mona, Cande Gerrard as Ahtee and Adrienne Bourbeau as Wana (not to be confused with Adrienne Barbeau from Escape from NY, the era's are obviously different).

It's a good thing that this is nothing more than a quick review because I'd struggle to find things to actually review. The Wild Women of Wongo is a contained film, contained meaning that the overall production is very small; sets, props, costumes, etc. The costumes alone bring hilarity to the viewing experience because all of the characters are dressed like they belong in the live-action version of The Flintstones. If your an "attention-to-detail" nut, you'll notice the little things like polished bone jewelry, plastic spears, and, shall I say, underwear. Who knew that women of cavemen times had underwear! Granted, that's just me nitpicking - who cares really, just between everything else, these are the few things I found amazing yet so enjoyable. Also, I didn't realize cavewomen had 50's style hair. They looked gorgeous!

It's such a cliche when actors who are playing cavemen, who actually live in crafted huts in this film, try and speak in fragments as if cavemen actually spoke that way. For example, if I was an actor in this film, I'd say something like, "After review... Phil... POST! Then... eat.... drink... me watch more shitty movie." That kind of thing. It's so awful yet so satisfying.

Don't be mistaken, however. The Wild Women of Wongo is a viewing experience for the movie fan and even at that, a movie fan that's bored and needs to watch something to pass the time. In short, this is an absolute terrible movie yet if your B-movie fan looking to see some original shit, The Wild Women of Wongo is right up your ally!

Remember, DANCE! For no apparent reason!

In fact, you can actually watch the full film with a commentary track from The Film Crew. Honestly, watching their version is probably more entertaining than what I saw - there is no commentary on the DVD! I had to endure the the dialog!
