Updated status on The Phantom feature film
I don't care what anyone thinks about The Phantom starring Billy Zane! That movie was awesome! It has such a cool cast - Kristy Swanson, Catherine Zeta Jones, Treat Williams, James Remar... what! Awesome.
A few months back, news came out that The Phantom was going to get the reboot treatment for the big screen. This is, however, not to be confused with the SciFi Channel treatment as this is a entirely different and separate project.
While speaking to The Phantom writer, Tim Boyle, Moviehole.net was able to get an update and status report on where they were at in the development process.
"The Phantom is still at scripting stage," says Boyle. "Although the comic studio and executive producers have given it two thumbs up, we're constantly pushing the screenplay forward. I believe the film will go into pre-production by the end of the year."
I like how a lot of screen writers try and take things seriously when it comes to comic book films. Batman Begins and The Dark Knight really started a trend in trying to make the best comic book film as possible. Iron Man is what we get from that inspiration. All of that, however, doesn't include FOX as they don't give a shit how their films turn out as long as they make money. If FOX is involved, X-Men Origins: Wolverine is what you'll get - garbage and an embarrassing film. With luck, Boyle will be able to put together a screen play that will make The Phantom something cool and not cheesy like the 96 film (still awesome).
"The 1996 film was a product of the time," he continues. "It was campy, not believable and didn't make much sense. Audiences want to connect with the film. Hopefully we can do that on this project."
It's going to be a long time before we find out but I'm looking forward to this even so.
