Highlander remake script review

I feel like it is a joke, honestly.  Everything this week has seriously been only about upcoming remakes of classic films that I'd rather not see remade or rebooted.  Unfortunately, I can't do anything about it except watch them when they come out only to say how awful it is compared to the original.  That's basically what is going to happen here with the remake of Highlander.  Highlander is one of the greatest science fiction/fantasy films ever made - this is the Ben-Hur of scifi and now it is up on the remake block, however, as they say in the film, "there can be only one."  What I mean is, the remake is going to be stupid, no one will care and the original will still be loved.

The interesting news is a script review has come online telling us about the proposed film.  As expected, it simply sounds like a studio attempt to make money because everything in the script review tell us that the movie lacks the soul of the original.  So what if it is written by the guys who wrote Iron Man - that doesn't mean they can handle something like the original Highlander and expect to make it better.  No, not going to happen.  I don't care who writes it - it just isn't going to happen.

"If the original film is Windows XP - it's been around for awhile, it may have a few problems, but all around it's solid; people are happy with it - then this reboot is Windows Vista," says CC2K in their script review.  For those who don't understand computer talk - Window XP is the operating system that most computers use.  I have it and more than likely you have it.  Windows Vista is another operating system - the difference is like driving a BMW (XP) and riding a bicycle with one wheel flat and the other not attached (Vista).  Honestly, Vista is garbage and for those of you considering buying Vista just because it is cheap, please trust me, it's junk and not worth your money.

The script review goes on to discuss how the writers are going about rebooting the story and all of it sounds like an update with the world of today.

For example, in the original film it is implied, though never clearly stated, that the immortals live by a certain code and that part of that code is to only use an edged weapon of choice (usually a sword) in their duels. You never see an immortal pull a shotgun or AK-47 and unload on their opponent, then calmly woke over to take their head. Yet in the remake the use of firearms is not only allowed, it is welcomed. At one point in the script while Ramirez (MacLeod's mentor, played by Sean Connery in the original) is teaching MacLeod how to fight, he tells him to always become proficient with the weapons of the time, and use whatever is necessary to gain an edge. Later we see MacLeod employ a sniper rifle in the hope of catching The Kurgan unawares and dispatching him from a safe distance. This all might be practical, but by including this element much of the charm of the original film is lost.

Why reboot this franchise?  It's so stupid.  On top of all of the remake talk is me disgusted.

Ugh...

I remember when you first posted there would be a remake, I was sick. Wow I hope this never happens. Phil you hit on the money the little pieces of the original like using the swords all through history is the charm of the film and even some of its plot wholes are charming in a way cause you can see that the movie was made with a commitment to the idea. Obviously I am huge fan of Highlander and this is beyond a bad idea and that little clip of the script edit is horrible wow. Worse than I thought.

A remake. Oh my. I don’t get it anymore. The original film was and still is fun. It’s sequels… better don’t talk about it. I had high hopes for the last installment of the series since I thought they might continue the look and feel of Highlander: The Series (wich I liked). Even Methos (who I liked very much) was in it.

But what happened? The movie destroyed everything the series stood for. How could the producers be soo stupid?

I thing the Highlander myth should be buried. The copies of every sequel burned and the terrific first movie put on an altar for continuing worship. ;-)

Every attempt at a sequel sucked harder than the last one. This has bad idea written all over it.

They won’t have the correct collaboration or amount of hard work and time put into this to make it good enough for a reboot. There’s just to much material to sift through and incorporate. That is of course if you want a trilogy. If you just want to remake the first movie… it will be a failure. The original stands alone. For this to succeed they’d have to go for a trilogy and incorporate aspects from the series and get the LORE straight. Come up with a better prize than being able to grow old, have kids and understand diplomats. Stick with edged weapon combat. No “dark quickenings”!! Maybe bring the watchers in towards the end of the first movie. I’ve said on other sites that they should feel an “irresistable pull” towards the land of their births. In other words the “Gathering” would take place in phases. First they battle with foes from their geographical areas of birth. Second movie Hemispheres or continents. Third the “few who remain will battle to the last”. I like that idea and i think i should make some money for it!!! :) No FIREARMS !!! Don’t ruin the edged weapon ritual combat!!! Keep the holy ground rule and let it be known that the quickening only transfers KNOWLEDGE, not power or behavioral characteristics!! For the love… Get your Lore straight and make a good movie! The right casting would be a must as well as a magnificent sound track. Don’t see how you could top or even equal the original stuff. I’d have to vote for Gerrard Butler for Conner Mcleod. Maybe Banderas as Ramirez and i have no idea who could pull off the Kurgan. The “Watchers” and “Hunters” could have a much bigger place in the 2 film. There they would try to influence the outcome and all hell would break loose. The real question is do you have the characters Amanda and Methos come back into it? Joe? Alot to think about. In my opinion this is really their last shot at making this right. If this fails it will be left alone for a very long time i’m guessing. and of course that maybe what’s best. I just love Highlander so much that i hope they get it right!

If they want to remake the highlander or the reboot, I think a three part movie just might nudge things a little.
What I meant a three part movie, is one whole story divided into three. Not a mini-series, somewhat of a trilogy.
But all things considered the writers would screw things up. making things confusing and senseless.
Judging from what I read, its improbable that the writers would get this one right.
as for the last one, what peeves me about highlander the source, that after the guardian had lost. Duncan McLeod flies away like a bearded fairy to meet Anna in the air.
not many good flicks this day of age.

I like the idea. While the first one is a great movie the rest of them have to be watched as either an alternate reality or as independant of the film (The series and series movies.) The 2nd movie was garbage the third was better. The writers have never been great at keeping with continuity. (Duncan says his sword was given to him by another immortal season 1, season three hideo koto gives him the sword.) So create another (ugh) alternate story line. No more quest movies. (The source sucked balls.) Make something worth watching. Also Banderas? Seriously? Playing an egyptian? “I’m not spanish, I’m egyptian.” - Ramirez (Tak Ne) Maybe if they don’t screw it up it will be a new launching point for a great series. The trilogy idea could work wonderfully. Hell have it happen over a period of centuries. Maybe even a final scene in space. Probably a dumb idea but who knows, it could work. They were going to have season six take place twenty yearsafter killing richie after all.

I thought i was pretty much the only one who noticed Duncans comment about the sword being given to him by an immortal in season 1, only to find out in the season 3 opener it’s Hideo Koto. Good job Josh… lol Yeah the only reason i mentioned Banderas for Ramirez is because i really can’t think of anyone who could replace Connery. Hell, in my opinion Conner, Ramirez and the Kurgan CAN’T be replaced!
