Chris Hemsworth is Kenneth Branagh’s Thor PLUS scores lead in Red Dawn
An answer to a burning question for comic book fans and movie fans is now avalible. Who's going to play Thor in the next big Marvel film?
"I've just learned that Marvel Studios' Kevin FeigeBranagh and director Kenneth have chosen their THOR -- and it's Chris Hemsworth..." says Nikky Finke from Deadline Hollywood. This news hit the net before the weekend so apologies for my lateness in posting this. Hemsworth can be seen currently in the Paramount blockbuster Star Trek where he plays George Kirk, the father of James T. Kirk. A lot of fans, however, have been criticizing Hemsworth's performance in Star Trek but I don't see it their way. Honestly, he did a fine job for the short time he was in that film - stop finding things to complain about people!
Not only is he playing Thor, he's also been cast in the Patrick Swayze lead role for the remake of Red Dawn. "[He] also just snagged the lead in Red Dawn for United Artists on Thursday," says Finke.
Hemsworth is probably having the greatest week of his life and on top of that he's currently filming a Joss Whedon project.
Finke tells us that Hemsworth's casting in Thor is "one of those great Hollywood backstories that happens only once in a blue moon." Here's the story from Finke herself:
Chris had read for the part of Thor but wasn't given a test because a casting director had nixed him early on. I'm told Chris' younger brother Liam (who's also a ROAR client) then tested for the role of Thor, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige passed. Then, after a conversation with Ward ("You've got to reconsider Chris, he's your guy"), Feige decided to let Chris read again. And once Marvel put him on tape, it was "Oh my god". Branagh came to town last week and saw the Chris test and made the final casting decision today.
I'm don't know Hemsworth's work at all so I really can't judge Marvel on this casting choice. I've never had a problem with a studio casting an unknown because a lot of the time, it works out for the better. Personally, I was more keen on the idea of Alexander Skarsgard from True Blood as Thor because he physically could work in the role, however, if Hemsworth's potential performance could be better, than I'll support this. When it's all said and done, I'm looking forward to seeing Thor and I hope Hemsworth can give us another great Marvel character.
