Robert Rodriguez’s Barbarella is NOT happening!

This is very sad news, at least from my point of view.  For the last couple of years producer and director Robert Rodriguez and actress Rose McGowan have been planning to bring a new big screen adaptation of Barbarella to theaters, but sadly, that's not happening anymore.

After Universal backed out because Barbarella was going to cost over $80 million dollars, Rodriguez looked for new sources of cash, however, after finding some he said no!  "It came to the point were [a company from] Germany offered us a $70 million budget, which would have been by far the biggest budget I ever would have had for a movie," Rodriguez said to MTV.  "But I had to shoot in Germany and post it in Germany.  Nothing against Germany, but I have five kids and I was like, 'God, I don't know if we can do that.  I don't know if I can be away that long."

That sucks....  I was really looking forward to seeing McGowan as Barbarella because Rodriguez wanted to go Heavy Metal with it.

"We had all this artwork and screen tests of what it would look like," he continues.  "It was a really cool, R-rated, sexy - almost like that [1981 animated] movie, 'Heavy Metal' - version of a 'Star Wars' movie.  Something that no one ever could get to see.  It was gonna be really great."

That pitch, for me at least, is what sells me on Barbarella but unfortunately it's not going to happen.  He goes on to say he hopes that one day he'll be able to release the artwork.

When a director says they want to make a Heavy Metal type movie, I'm always interested because you really can't get more gritty bad ass science fiction than Heavy Metal.  Along with that, Rodriguez is an awesome director and he has such a talent to take a movie and make it look like he spent a hundred million on it even if the budget is really low.

This is sad news but maybe one day this will all change and it will get back on track.

I will call it surprising news, not necessarily sad news for me. Anytime RR doesn’t get what he wants in this day and age its a surprise. He could have done wonders with $70 million.
