Fast and Furious review

Beware of spoilers for Fast and Furious.  You've been warned!

The Fast and Furious franchise is honestly a strange franchise; Granted the films aren't that great, you can't help but come back for more every time a new movie is made. As it is with this film, Fast and Furious gave us more of a reason to come back - the return of the original cast. A comeback attempt by Vin Diesel isn't anything I've ever been interested in, although I love Chronicles of Riddick, his reappearance in this franchise was something that I found curious enough to actually want to see this movie. I'm not alone in that because right now as I'm writing this, Fast and Furious is estimated to bring in over $72 million dollars domestic with an added $30 million for the international take. That's pretty insane and will probably signal another sequel which is rumored to be on the drawing board already.

I've never been a huge fan of these films but I've also seen them all. It's strange - I don't consider myself a die hard fan of these films but everytime they're on TV I can't help but watch. I suppose it's all of the hot girls, cool cars, and my enjoyment for bad movies that are fun. So with that in mind and the return of the original cast, for the most part, I expected to see more of the same - I'd figure, "well, this should be fun and stupid." Guess what folks, it is fun and surprisingly better than the second and third films which has everything to do with Vin Diesel's return. Wow, can't believe I said that.  That's not saying much anyways.

"Heading back to the streets where it all began, two men rejoin two women to blast muscle, tuner and exotic cars across Los Angeles and floor through the Mexican desert. When a crime brings them back to L.A., fugitive ex-con Dom Toretto reignites his feud with agent Brian O'Connor. But as they are forced to confront a shared enemy, Dom and Brian must give in to an uncertain new trust if they hope to outmaneuver him. And from convoy heists to precision tunnel crawls across international lines, two men will find the best way to get revenge: push the limits of what's possible behind the wheel." That's the Universal Studios plot synopsis but it's not accurate. In short, something happens forcing Dom to come back to the United States to seek revenge on a drug cartel. Investigating the same Drug cartel is Brian O'Connor who's now working with the FBI. The two meet, they race, they race some more with gun fights, explosions and Jordana Brewster. Justin Lin directs Vin Diesel in a return to the character Dominic Toretto. Also returning is Paul Walker as Brian O'Conner, Jordana Brewster as Mia Toretto, and Michelle Rodriguez as Letty with Gal Gadot as Gisele Harabo.

Likes:

  • I really like the fact that it's a true sequel to the original and although it's a ridiculous movie, it's cool seeing these characters again.
  • This movie has more American muscle than the others did and that's awesome. We see the return of Dom's car from the first film which Letty fixed up and a Gran Torino which looks exactly like the one from Clint Eastwood's film Gran Torino. One has nothing to do with the other I just thought I'd mention it.
  • Han from Fast and Furious 3 makes a cameo appearance at the beginning of the film. Sure, the third move is the worst of the bunch, which isn't saying much, but it's cool to see his character.
  • Surprisingly, the action was pretty damn cool.
  • Jordana Brewster is super hot, ... really damn hot.

Dislikes:

  • The story is stupid. What else can be said. It felt like a recycled Michael Bay Bad Boys II plot - but honestly, who cares. It's not like this is cinematic history.
  • The acting isn't anything great - did you expect good acting?  If you did, I'm sorry.
  • Bad dialog, no surprise.
  • Stupid story, ... I already said that. To be more clear, it's actually pretty boring at times. They tried to pull a dramatic card with this movie because of Letty's murder. It doesn't work - not for the type of movie this is.
  • Not enough Jordana Brewster and not enough Michelle Rodriguez.  They were the big draw for me because they're hot.

What can be said about Fast and Furious. It's more of the same and if your a fan of these films your probably going to enjoy it, however, it's not a good movie and I don't recommend it to general movie goers. If your the simple "lets go see a movie" kind of person, I'd say go see something else. That said, if your a fan of fast cars, sexy chicks and the first Fast and Furious film - sure, go and see it. You'll probably have fun with it like I did.

Given the fact that I had fun with it; it also being better than the second and third film, but also understanding that it's the same damn thing as the first film I'd say Fast and Furious deserves a 5.5 out of 10. In short, see it if your a fan otherwise, go watch something else.
