The Lost review

Beware of mild spoilers.

Those of you who've been reading this site since the beginning and in some cases before I started NFD, are well aware that I'm totally in love with Lacey Chabert, ... yes, even more than I am with Summer Glau. Lacey is the unmovable hotties champ, for lack of a better term. Without going into the reasons why I think Lacey is awesome, since this review isn't all about her, I have to admit - I don't usually make an effort to watch her films. Why, you ask? I contradict myself you say! Let's call it what it is folks; Lacey's choices in what movies to star in don't usually turn out to be all that great. This film "The Lost" is, however, a chance for her to stretch the acting chops I know she has but that all depends on if "The Lost" is any good.

I remember many months ago back in April I saw the trailer for "The Lost", I wasn't all that enthused to see it because it didn't look all that interesting. Sure, Lacey gets to play a girl with multiple personalities which would be a chance to see her range as an actress but other than that, this film really didn't look all that cool. Yes, unfortunately I was right in my assumption and this movie is pretty damn awful.

"The Lost" is a sort of cheap supernatural thriller that brings Armand Assante to a mental hospital to help a young girl named Jane, played by Chabert, from being a crazy ass chick. That's the best description I can offer because this film isn't all that rich in story. Oh, and Dina Meyer is also in it. Directed by Bryan Goeres, "The Lost" stars Armand Assante as Kevin, Lacey Chabert as Jane and Dina Meyer as Mira.

Likes:

  • The fact that I like the principle cast members - Assante, Chabert, and Meyer is the only reason why I kept watching.
  • The make-up that made Lacey look washed out is actually pretty well done.

Dislikes:

  • Even though I like him, Assante simply walks through this film and shows no effort what-so-ever. And I couldn't get Judge Dredd out of my mind.
  • What Dina Meyer was doing in this movie, I'll never know. It's not like she's a fantastic actress but she should have just stayed away. Even so, it's the same with her as it is with Assante - she just walked right through this film and took the steps needed to fill her purpose.
  • The "twist" at the end, without spoiling it, is ridiculous and extremely cliche.
  • This feels like it was taken right out of a bad episode of the X-Files and is on the level of the bad X-Files sequel that came out last summer. Actually, "I want to believe" was a lot better than this.
  • The music is awful and laughable. To be honest, it sounds like it was ripped from a cheesy 80s horror movie.
  • I hate to say it - she'll hate me for it (not like she knows me anyhow) but Lacey wasn't that great either. She's a better actress than that, and that is proven with a lot of the other films she has done but I kind of felt embarrassed for her while watching this. Sweet heart, please, ... fire your agent.
  • I can't forget - I can understand if some people don't want to smoke cigarettes, it's a shitty habit that I'm personally glad to be ride of, but if I was in a movie and I was required to smoke, I'd actually smoke it. For example, when one smokes a cigarette they inhale the smoke. Lacey, didn't and it's really obvious making the smoking scene really laughable. I applaud Lacey for not inhaling, but come on! Was the director really not willing to do a rewrite or scrap the scene.
  • Speaking of direction, there was none.
  • etc... Really, I don't need to go on.

In short, please - go watch something else. "The Lost" offers nothing new, exciting, fun, thrilling, or even interesting. As much as I admire the principle cast, it's no excuse for a terrible movie that no one should ever see. I still love Lacey unconditionally, however. On a scale of 1 to 10, "The Lost" gets a 2 out of 10 just for the fact that Lacey is in it.

Got news for ya, buddy boy: That wasn’t makeup, that’s what she really looks like after a couple restless nights before she puts on her makeup. Heck, if anything, they prettied her up slightly. You’ll notice her hair is still quite nice.
