Could the original 1978 Battlestar Galactica get a big screen sequel?

Before I actually tell you the story, let me just say that I don't believe this rumor at all.

The series finale of the popular and critically acclaimed SciFi Channel Battlestar Galactica is almost here but who gives a shit because Universal wants to make a big screen 1978 version with Glen Larson.  Allegedly at least.

"We were informed that the film will be based on the original BSG series from 1978-79 rather than the recent reboot from SciFi Channel," says IGN

I don't want to spend too much time on this story because it's really stupid.  Why in gods name would Universal make a big screen movie out of the really horrible cheesy version of Battlestar Galactica instead of making a big screen film for the current critically acclaimed television series?  That's retarded and anybody in their right mind would laugh Glen Larson out of the studio.

Now, if the plan was to make a film about the first Cylon war based off of the Ron Moore series, than that's totally cool.

Otherwise... this is just really stupid news.

Because Big Movie Companies are run by Idiots who Want to Make Money (TM). They see Battlestar as a chance to do a reimagining of a classic sci-fi show and they think that the TV show is too low-budget, or too dark, or too *something* for the big screen.

They will probably reimagine it differently if the project gets greenlit, and we’ll see a very different version than both the 70’s one and Ron Moore/David Eick’s dark one. It has potential, but it could also suck royally, I don’t know.

After years and years of Ron’s BSG, I have to say, I’m sortof glad it’s going off the air. The story’s run its course, and it was time to end, especially considering I really don’t think the writers knew exactly what they were doing ;) Don’t get me wrong, the show is well-made for what it is, but it became apparent years ago that they had no clue where the show was going in the longer term.

We’re in disagreement, Soran. I think they had a very good idea where they were going, it just took some fleshing out as do all shows. Besides, just look at the show, … I doubt they just winged it. It’s too complicated.

In away, I agree that it’s good that it’s going off air but because it’s nice to see a show go out on it’s own terms instead of running out of steam or being pushed a side for something else like Atlantis.

*nods* I agree, more shows should be ready to end instead of being cancelled. Its tragic.

I got Richard Hatch’s autograph at the NEC memorabilia ( UK England all the surviving main cast were there.) there he said he was trying to get funds for a new battlestar film/TV , even though he was in the new one. He showed a 6 minute trailer for this at the time. So while i do have some doubts about this, it could well be true. That he has now in talks with other about it.
