13 Worst Film & Television Fears of 2009
What are you excited about in 2009? I know I'm pumped for a shit load of things coming this year, but what would happen, how would you feel if those things your excited for turned out to be crap? It's a horrible notion.
Below I listed my own personal 13 worst fears for 2009, granted most of them aren't the worst things in life, but the fact remains - if it happens I'll be upset. If most of these don't occur, I'll call it a good year but if they all occur... blah!
What's your worst fear or fears for 2009? What don't you want to happen? What do you want to happen? My fears can't be the same as yours - list what your thinking.
Let's start with the last on the list but probably the most important.
13 - No more deaths of young actors!
This probably should be higher in the list but the sad thing is, it's a fact of life and nothing can be done about it. It's one thing when someone we admire passes away because of old age or an illness that has been with the person for a long time - it's another thing when one day he/she is working and one day they're dead. The biggest surprise of last year was of course Heath Ledger, not saying any other death wasn't a surprise, but lets call it what it is - Heath's death was the most popular in the media.
I'd like to at least have one year where nobody literally drops dead out of no where. It sucks and nobody wants it to happen, but like I said, it's sad because it's a fact of life and if it happens we have no choice but to move on. It would be nice to say that 2009 wasn't a bad year in entertainment.
12 - With luck, we won't have a bad summer film season.
Remember the summer of 2007 - We had threequels of Spider-Man, Pirates, Shrek and a few others, among a bunch of other films you probably wouldn't remember. Other than Transformers and The Bourne Ultimatum, 2007 sucked! You all know it. Thankfully this past summer (2008) turned out very good but 2009 has to be MY year. With Star Trek, Transformers 2, Terminator 4, Angels & Demons, Harry Potter, and a bunch of other things coming out, if all of them suck I'll give up watching movies. Hopefully I won't be disappointed but this blockbuster season.
One never knows - all of those films could be terrible - I doubt it, yet I still fear it.
11 - I hope Angels & Demons doesn't fail crowds like The Da Vinci Code
It's no secret that The Da Vinci Code was a critical failure with critics and the general public. People felt it was brutally boring, except for me of course - I loved Da Vinci and I really think it's a fantastic movie for a bunch of different reasons. In short, Tom Hanks is my favorite actor and if a movie is about history; fact, fiction, science fiction, or legend, I'm a total sucker for it. The fact remains, however, that people generally didn't like it, but with luck Ron Howard and Tom Hanks made up for it in Angels & Demons. I know people love the book so hopefully they'll love the movie. Da Vinci deserves more credit even though people would never agree with me.
10 - I hope award consideration season is just as good as this 2008!
What a season it's been, hasn't it? Slumdog Millionaire, The Wrestler, Frost/Nixon, Gran Torino, and I could go on. I really hope that the end of 2009 brings the same quality in movies because 08 was fantastic!
I love blockbuster movies but on occasion I like watching movies that actually say something important and have meaning. I don't know what is in store for next year but it seems each year gets better and better.
Slumdog Millionaire 2..... haha, that would be stupid.
9 - The Academy Awards better not waste my time!
The Oscars are coming up in several weeks, Feb. 22nd, and it better be good. The Oscars is the Super Bowl for movie fans or it least it should be. The Super Bowl is crazy entertaining.... right? So why do we get idiot and unfunny hosts like Ellen DeGeneres? At least this year the Oscar gets some class with Hugh Jackman even though don't know if he'll be entertaining to watch.
The ceremony needs to be fun, funny, and show a lot of class, but unfortunately it hasn't been like that in a few years. Maybe this year will be the year...
8 - Michael Bay better have improved from Transformers 1 to Transformers 2
I have no doubt that the action will be insane in Transformers 2... no doubt, but I really hope Michael Bay learned from his mistakes he made in the first film. We all know Bay isn't the greatest story teller in the industry but we do know he's the greatest action director, even so there's a couple of stuff I'd like to see different or improved. For example, I want more robots, robot face close ups, hopefully he'll pull the camera back to see the action, more robot interaction and less human characters.
I know Transformers 2 is going to be awesome but if he doesn't do those things, it will probably annoy me to death. What sucks is I know a lot of human characters have been cast so that does annoy me a little, but we'll see how it turns out when it premieres.
7 - What if the Battlestar Galactica Finale is awful
We've waited so long for the last 10 episodes of Galactica. What would happen if the last episode is really stupid and nobody likes it? They'd probably be a couple of riots around America. Honestly, I feel like we're in for something really special but I'm really scared that the finale won't pay us off. After all this time, I don't want to be disappointed or underwhelmed like the cast was when they reached Earth.
A lot of TV shows have great series runs but their finale sometimes isn't special. I hope we have some sort of closure, at least on this chapter.
6 - Another failed Joss Whedon product?
Dollhouse is ready to premiere on TV in a couple of weeks and like most SciFi fans, I'm excited, but it's on FOX.... Friday nights. We know the history of that. The only advantage is that it's paired with The Sarah Connor Chronicles but what if that isn't good enough. What if it gets cancelled after it's first season or first couple of episodes? That, my friends, would suck... unless the show sucks and it deserves it, but I doubt it will. We need Summer Glau and Eliza Dushku in a row... we need it!
I miss the Whedon brand and I'm glad something new is coming to television again.
5 - I'm praying that John Connor doesn't sound like Batman in The Dark Knight
I love Christian Bale, not only for Batman, but we can all agree that his Batman voice in The Dark Knight is ridiculous. The trailer to Terminator 4 also has a quick segment were he sounds just like Batman. I really don't think it will be the case in T4 but if I have to sit through 2 hours of grumbling... ughhh. I don't know if I could take it. At least The Dark Knight made up for it as a whole but there is a chance McG will screw this thing up royally.
We all know how I feel about the upcoming Terminator film and if you dont... I'm not very optimistic on McG's ability.
4 - I hope Heroes improves
Season 2, not good - Most of Season 3, not great but it's getting better - Second half of season 3 and forward, who knows, but I hope it gets a lot better. I miss the cinematic virtue of season 1. It was really epic and made Heroes into a very popular show but the season after really pissed people off.
My hope is that it improves greatly because I really love Heroes and I want it to succeed. Season 3 is getting better and I hear that the rest of the season is really entertaining so hopefully my fear is misplaced at this point, I'm still skeptical however.
3- Derek Reese better not be the "big death" of season 2
Derek Reese played by Brian Austin Green is my current favorite character on television but his time may be up on The Sarah Connor Chronicles. We know that Josh Friedman (creator) said a big death is coming for one of our major characters but we don't know who. I'm hoping it isn't one of the four - Cameron, Sarah, John and Derek. Seriously, the character of Derek made this show one of my favorites on television and if he gets killed, I don't know if I'll be able to continue to watch because Derek is such an important character. I really don't want to see that character to go and if it happens I'm going to be really really pissed off.
I'd rather see John Connor killed and the future with it... really. Lol... Derek rules!
2 - 3rd season for TSCC!
It has been a great season for TSCC but the ratings haven't been that impressive and with the move to Fridays the fate of this show is unknown. The hope is that it can feed off of Dollhouse and visa versa, but what the outcome will be nobody knows. I don't want this show to end because it's really one of the best on television. It won't deserve cancellation... but I will admit that FOX has been supporting it big time. If they cancel it, I'll be surprised... than I'll rip into FOX because it will be the thing to do. I do, however, feel safe about the series but at the same time very cautious and scared of cancellation.
1 - If Star Trek sucks, I'll do something rash
I grew up on Star Trek, it's my favorite franchise out of all franchises. My favorite series is of course TOS and the fact that we, for the first time, will be able to see those characters in those uniforms from that era (in the show) in action on the big screen is epic. We'll be able to see those characters evolve, hopefully in a special way. What if JJ Abrams falls flat on his face and destroys Star Trek... What if he kills Kirk and crew?
This is my biggest fear for 2009. If Star Trek is nothing but a disappointment.... I don't know how I'll feel. If it's a disappointment, it could be the end of that wagon train to the stars.

Your number one is mine too.
Star Trek will define most of the next year. I hope for a good story and less modern style action sequences. I WANT TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS, Mr. Abrams and not guess what happens like in the action scenes of the last Bond movie! With luck Trek may be a chance for a SciFi ressurection in cinema and tv. And I hope for a new Trek series soon.
This is a great list man, thanks so much. I agree with you on all. Thanks!
Good list. I hope Doll House makes it.
The best and worst of times for sci-fi…a lot of stuff out there, but with so much of it not being good it gives the impression to the public that sci-fi is just some geeky fad.
I was having a discussion with someone about really getting into the movies, and although there have been some highlights there hasen’t been anything epic since the last LOTR. Sure Dark Knight comes close, but beyond its one extremely well played dark note it doesn’t have much else to offer. A movie or series has to come out and plant a flag for the rest to follow. As for Lost or BSG, it is way too early to claim victory there till we see the endings, ESPECIALLY since the whole story is based on the final secerts.
I agree with this list 100%.
I hate to burst your bubble and I know I’m late arriving to this link but anyone that’s read Angels and Demons is going to hate the movie.
And on a side note, Gran Torino sucked. If that movie had anyone other than Clint Easstwood in it, nothing would have come of it. But everything that guy does, is the best thing ever (insert laughter here)
He hasn’t directed a good movie since Unforgiven in 1992 (which was amazing, but mostly due to Freeman and Hackman) and he hasn’t acted well since Absolute Power in 1997 (Again, Hackman was better). Million Dollar Baby was an unholy piece of crap that should be crated and sealed like the Arc of the Covanent was in Raiders. The guy grunts and gargles all his dialogue (worst than Christian Bale) and the movies are long, dry and boring.
Maybe I’m being too hard on him, Changling was not bad (bonus points for Angelina) and Flags of Our Fathers had some pretty decent war scenes (Pachendale blew them out of the water…with a smaller budget too). But the guy is given too much credit for simply being the great Clint Eastwood and it needs to stop. Thank you.
>Derek Reese better not be the “big death” of season 2
Ouch. Sorry, man.
Please don’t say that Star Trek is great, it is an insult to Sci fiction.
With all the other great series/movies that are around, I don’t want to be offensive, but I cannot stand to somebody who likes Star Trek.
The 2009 Star Trek was an awesome movie! If you guys don’t like it… shame. Great list btw!
