Andrew Stanton talks about John Carter of Mars; Casting starts soon

I've said a few times that this is one project coming up that I'm looking very much forward to. Wall-E director Andrew Stanton's next film is John Carter of Mars which he's in pre-production for right now. He hasn't said much about the proposed film but during the Los Angeles Film Critics Association award ceremony he spoke to SciFi Wire saying he's "deep into it".
For the past couple of months people have been unsure if John Carter was going to be live action or CG, and Stanton never gave a clear answer because he has said before, he wasn't sure yet. SciFi Wire was able to get the answer - it's going to be a live action film. "Yeah, I think that's the only way," he said. " I mean, there are so many creatures and characters that half of it's going to be CG whether you want it to be [or not], just to realize some of these images that are in the book. But it will feel real. The whole thing will feel very, very believable." Although he said there is going to be a lot of CG elements he also points out that Pixar won't be doing the CG work because they don't want to become a special effects company.
So where is he at? "I'm on my next draft of it. We're in preproduction art-wise, and we're starting to talk to actors. So it's full bore."
Lastly, he's aiming for a PG-13 rating. He says, "Well, if you do the story right, there's no way you couldn't." Personally, I'd rather see a hard R but when you have film coming out from Disney, a hard R wouldn't be possible. I'm assuming John Carter will be a light soft PG-13, but that doesn't mean it won't be good. I'm really excited for this film to get made and I can't wait to start seeing art, photos, vids and so on. That, however, won't be for a very long time so all we can do for now is wait in anticipation.
