Guillermo del Toro to direct The Witches?

Anyone remember that movie from a good long while ago starring Angelica Houston called The Witches about a young boy who gets trapped in a hotel where a  Witch convention is taking place?  I remember it, and it still creeps me out... even that photo to the right is turning my stomach but the funny thing is, every time it's on TV I watch it.  I first saw it when I was a kid and it was crazy and weird yet I always tuned in when it was on television.

The news for today is that one of my favorite directors Guillermo del Toro is going to possibly direct an new film in what I suppose is a remake.  The interesting thing is that I'm not really considering it a remake because it's not a live action film, so I guess it really isn't a remake... um, yea.  Apparently it's going to be stop-motion animation which could be very cool especially when it comes from the mind of that out of reality director GDT.

While speaking to Empire Magazine Alfanso Cuaron who would act as producer on Witches said, "Well I am involved with Guillermo del Toro, but as a producer, not a director.  I think it started because I've always wanted to do a version of Roald Dahl's very naught Uncle Oswald.  So we were talking to Lucy Dahl, when we got onto the subject of The Witches.  Then Guillermo wrote this amazing screenplay really quickly.  It won't be like the original Nicholas Roeg version, which was a beautiful film - because Guillermo wants to do it completely in stop-motion animation."

That could turn out to be very interesting, however, I don't see how GDT could actually make this film because if you've forgotten, he has committed himself to The Hobbit and it's sequel which will take years to prep, shoot, and post.  On the other hand, stop-motion animation could also take a very long time to complete so maybe he'll squeeze it in.  Overall, I'm for it and I think it could be something very interesting and cool.
