I Am Legend might be a sequel?

Spoiler for I Am Legend's ending, so be careful if you haven't seen it yet.

Ever since I Am Legend premiered at the beginning of the year, we've been hearing rumblings that a supposed prequel was in the works but now that is in question; not a movie in general but the prequel actually being a prequel.  AICN received word that I Am Legend 2 is possibly going to be a sequel, but that doesn't make sense.

An untested source that emailed this info into AICN says, "Let's start at the beginning.  Smith is actually the one who developed the initial story."  Which isn't anything new because Smith has been known to make up stories for movies, just not a lot of them ever happened.  The source Westwood9 continues, "It took place several years before the original film and there were still pockets of survivors and the story centered around Smith interacting, bonding, and ultimately failing to save them.  For months this was the story.  Warner's didn't much care for it and Smith and Weiss eventually came on board and all parties agreed to change things up.  Well this change is pretty insane, the film is no longer a prequel, it's a fucking sequel!"

I think most people would have liked to have seen a sequel to I Am Legend but Smith died at the end of the film, however, the original ending had Smith live, and ending that I liked soo much more.  Does that mean the studios might some how incorporate the original ending into the continuity of the first film?  Who knows but this is just rumors coming from a source even AICN doesn't know so that being the case, take this a just a grain of salt and let's wait for official word.  We don't even know if another film is really in the works.
