Starz picks up a 13 episode series called Spartacus
Spartacus is turning into a TV series! Sam Raimi is still a fan of the sword and sandal shows and with his other new series Legend of the Seeker, these types of shows are coming back to television.
Spartacus has been picked up for a 13 episode season set to premiere next summer. Starz exec Stephan Shelanski tells The Hollywood Reporter that this version of Spartacus "is not going to be at all like the 1960s Kirk Douglas film." Not for nothing.... I doubt anything can be like that film. "We didn't want your typical sword-and-sandals. it's going to be fun, fast-moving, full of action and interesting characters and have a little more depth to it than the 1960s film," says Shelanski.
On top of his description, Spartacus will also be told in an R-rated fashion. That's always a cool thing to shoot for. The series will also be presented in a "graphic-novel look and feel" like 300 and Sin City. They are also looking to cast a group of young no names to star.
All of this is just fine, but in the end like anything else, how it turns out could be a totally different thing. This could be the chance for Raimi to bring back Xena and Hercules in some form. It seems like he is reemerging the sword and sandal shows with Legend of the Seeker and now Spartacus on the way. Maybe he's paving the way for a return to an already established franchise we all love. Or, it could just be wishful thinking.
All that said, I'm eagerly looking forward to seeing the premiere of Spartacus!
