Rob Tapert updates the future of Evil Dead
Up until early last week, I've never seen Evil Dead. I've seen Army of Darkness a shit load of times, but as for Evil Dead; never seen it, yet. As for Evil Dead II; I kind of saw it when I was a little younger. I don't remember it that much. However, I saw it again last week. Remember when I was sick with that horrible virus... Since I wasn't posting and I wasn't going to my day job. I sat down and watched it. Unfortunately I was too sick to really get into it. All that said, I still loved it but I'm going to re-watch it probably this weekend. I'll also watch the first film thanks to NFD contributor Ernest for lending me the DVDs.
For the longest time fans of the franchise have always asked for a 4th film. Producer Rob Tapert updates SciFi Wire on what he knows. Tapert says that they've been kicking three ideas around; musical, sequel or remake. Each of the three, Sam Raimi, Tapert and Bruce Campbell seem to apparently want different things. Raimi apparently wouldn't mind a remake (I'm disappointed in him), Tapert wouldn't mind a musical (STUPID!) and Bruce Campbell wants a sequel (he's truly a hero).
There's a guy [producer Don Carmody] who wants to make a musical out of it, a 3-D musical based on the one that ran off-Broadway [Evil Dead: The Musical]," Tapert tells SF Wire. "And I still think that that's the one I'd like to see greatly." Honestly, lets keep the musicals on Broadway. Don't get me wrong, I don't have any problems with musicals, but if Evil Dead became a musical on the big screen... I would see it because I think that's a horrible idea.
When referring to the remake Tapert says, "Sam and I have kicked that idea around, with Sam really being the person [pushing for it] over Bruce's objections and kind of my going, 'Why?' It was a movie that nobody saw theatrically, and it was meant to be a theatrical experience. If we could get some young filmmaker to go and say, 'I can make this far better than Sam did,' we should let him go and try. Sam is the one who keeps saying, 'We should do that,' and I'm the one too busy and somewhat too reluctant and lazy to really fully enable Sam to get it done."
I'm really happy to hear that Bruce Campbell is telling Sam Raimi not to do a remake. I can't believe he's even thinking of doing a remake. It's sad when a highly regarded director wants to just hand some of his most popular work to somebody else. Thankfully our true hero is Bruce Campbell. As for Tapert wanting a musical... blah. Not for nothing he pisses me off. If you didn't know he was one of the exec producers and writers of Hercules and Xena. Fans of those shows, including myself are patently waiting for more from those franchises.... and we've seen nothing. Maybe I'm just jealous because he's married to Lucy Lawless.
