Ridley Scott to direct a Sci-Fi called The Forever War
It has been nearly 25 years since Ridley Scott directed a science fiction film. 3 of his films back in the 80s are 3 films that influenced me as a sci fi fan and influenced movie history in general. Alien, Blade Runner and Legend are some of my favorite and earliest memory sci fi's. So I've alway's hoped that Scott would once again direct a SF film.
A couple of months ago, Scott did hint that one of his upcoming projects was going to be an SF film but he stayed quiet on what it actually was going to be. At last news has finally come out what SF book Scott will be adapting.
Thanks to the skills of Slashfilm.com, Ridley Scott will be directing The Forever War:
“Private William Mandella is a hero in spite of himself — a reluctant conscript drafted into an elite military unit, and propelled through space and time to fight in a distant thousand-year conflict. He never wanted to go to war, but the leaders on Earth have drawn a line in the interstellar sand — despite the fact that their fierce alien enemy is unknowable, unconquerable, and very far away. So Mandella will perform his duties without rancor and even rise up through the military’s ranks . . . if he survives. But the true test of his mettle will come when he returns to Earth. Because of the time dilation caused by space travel the loyal soldier is aging months, while his home planet is aging centuries — and the difference will prove the saying: you never can go home. . .”
The Forever War is a popular book from the 1970's that Scott has actually been trying to get made for 25 years. He tells the trades, "I first pursued 'Forever War' 25 years ago, and the book has only grown more timely and relevant since. It's a science-fiction epic, a bit of 'The Odyssey' by way of 'Blade Runner,' built upon a brilliant, disorienting premise."
I can't tell you how excited this makes me. This is huge in the world of Phil. I don't know or ever heard of this book, because I don't usually read books, but if it's a Ridley Scott directed science fiction, it's already a fantastic movie. Scott is one of those director's that have a certain visual style when it comes to his SF films. I know it's a different generation of film making today but I really hope Scott can bring back his style from the 80s and create something that feels the same and looks epic.
There's no word when this will start filming but I'll keep you updated of course.
-Phil
