Oscars to show exclusive movie trailers for upcoming films

It probably comes as no surprise to you but the day of the Academy Awards is my super bowl.  It's no secret that movies, in most cases, is more than a hobby for me.  It's a passion.  So when the Oscars come around, it's a fun day for me.  That said, the Oscar ceremony is utterly boring.  It has been the last couple of years ever since Billy Crystal stopped hosting.  Honestly, the hosts haven't help with the entertainment of the show.  Ellen DeGeneres, in my opinion, is the worst host that the Oscars ever had.

This past Academy Awards saw the all-time low for the ceremony with 32 million views.  Sure that's still a lot but it's also the record low for the Oscars.  Like any buisness, nobody wants to lose viewers or money, they want more.

In an effort to change things up and make it a little more fresh a 56 year Oscar rule will change but with stricked guidelines.  Variety's Award Central says, "[The Academy] had banned movie advertising ever since the Oscars were first televised in 1953 in an effort to avoid any suggestion that studio coin influenced the outcome of the awards."  That is going to change because movie trailers and advertisements will now be part of the Oscars this year.

Here are the rules:

  • Acad will allow one spot per distributor, either 30 or 60 seconds in length.
  • The spot must not have run anywhere else prior to its debut on the Oscarcast.
  • The spot may not use the terms "Oscar" or "Academy Award."
  • The spot may only promote one pic, not a slate of pics.
  • There will only be one movie spot per commercial break during the three-hour telecast.

I've read a couple of websites that think this is a bad idea but I disagree.  The Oscars is a celebration of movies.  All the stars show up in a great red carpet ceremony that we can see thanks to E! Entertainment and sometimes it's an entertaining award ceremony.  Movie studio's are going to promote their blockbuster films anyways.  The Oscars usually aren't host to those types of movies so it doesn't even matter.  They won't influence Oscar voting is what I'm trying to say.

I'm going to guess this year we'll see trailers for Transformers or Star Trek maybe Terminator 4.  I think it's a great idea but when it comes down to it the most important thing is that they get a really great host this year.
