Blade Runner 2???

This could be the greatest news this past year or the scariest news.

A possibility that a Blade Runner sequel script is in development out side of studio hands.  A spec script.

Slashfilm.com is all over the subject of Blade Runner saying that the one of the writers from Eagle Eye Travis Wright is working on Blade Runner 2 but according to his one time writing partner John Glenn, this is inaccurate.

Lets start from the beginning.  Slashfilm received an e-mail from one of their readers saying that during a Q & A session for Eagle Eye that the writers were currently creating a Spec script for Blade Runner.  "During the Q&A, the writer said that he and whomever it was that helped him co-write the 'Eagle Eye' screenplay were in the process of writing a sequel to Blade Runner, and had already contacted the producers of the original," says the e-mail.

One of the co-writers of Eagle Eye John Glenn sent an e-mail to Slashfilm with this response: "John Glenn, here. I just read your article about myself and Travis Wright working on a remake of Blade Runner … Travis and I actually broke off as writing partners years ago - after the first draft of Eagle Eye. Due to previous commitments, I couldn’t make the screening / Q&A last week — so to be honest, I have no idea what Travis was talking about or why he brought up a project we were tooling with years ago, when we still wrote together. There was a point where Travis and I were working with Bud Yorkin on a sequel to Blade Runner, but that was years back. It never got too far off the ground because the movie is so perfect, so the more we thought about it, the more uneasy we became with the idea. Anyway, just an note to clear the air. My apologies to you and your readers for the confusion Travis created."

Now to be clear so you understand; Warner Bros (I believe) still has the rights to Blade Runner and as far as I can tell, they haven't commissioned any writers to pen a script.  So whoever is involved in writing this is basically doing this on their own to pitch to the studio.  In short; nobody is getting paid to write a sequel, they're doing this for free.  Also, at one point or another original director Ridley Scott did express interest in a sequel but his involvement with this script is unknown.  He's also very busy doing other films so who knows if he'd even have the time.

I love Blade Runner to death.  It's one of the first films that I can remember as a kid.  It's one of the reasons why I love Sci Fi so much.  Today it's considered to be one of the greatest science fiction films ever made even though reviews during its original release weren't very good (long story).  Am I interested in a sequel?... yes honestly.  However, at the same time, I don't think a sequel should be made.  I don't know.  I'm afraid that a sequel could be a mistake. The first film is unique, for all time, and it's uniqueness can't never be replaced, recreated or followed up.

All that said, if Ridley Scott gave the go on the script... I'm might be convinced but I'm also very skeptical.  To be honest, I doubt a second film will ever be made so there isn't really anything to worry about.
