Sci-Fi and Fantasy: Thoughts and gallery on a different level of genre (Mature Content)

Take note, this post may not be for everyone.  I thought it was time for something different. **Mature Content and Not Safe for Work (nsfw)**

So what's so special about fantasy & science fiction art?  Some might say just nothing or it's perverted and a range of other things that are probably insulting to the artist.  Most people have an appreciation of some of the major art work and artists out in the world, I won't name them because it has nothing to do with this.  I've never been a fan of art, specifically painted art.  I like a lot of sculptures, mainly historic artifacts but over all I could care less... I'm a movie guy as you well know.

It's obvious by the content that I post that my favorite genre in film and television is science fiction and fantasy.  Whether it's light and fun or dark and gritty, it doesn't matter because the journey into a different reality, worlds and visions expands the mind and makes one think more.  It's either escapism or reality TV and lets be honest; who wants to watch reality TV when the reality we live in is dull, repetitive and a lot of the time annoying and violent.  It's life, we have no choice but to continue this path but when the day is over, what better way to spend your prime time evenings with TV shows like (click the titles to see a video) Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Heroes (Watchmen), Terminator, Stargate and a large range of TV shows for all kinds of people.  When the weekend comes, especially during the summer, what better way is there to spend your spare time by watching movies like Lord of the Rings, Transformers, The Dark Knight, hopefully Star Trek (2009) or by looking at past films like the Indiana Jones and the Back to the Future trilogy's.  Would you rather watch a couple of lame men and women try to woo each other on a show like The Bachelor or would you rather expand the mind and look into a world that's not our own by watching visionaries films like Ridley Scott's Blade Runner and Legend or films like The Abyss, Highlander, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, ET and Conan the Barbarian.  These are just some examples that makes entertainment and this genre so fun and captivating.

In science fiction, nothing is full of more fantasy and eroticism than Heavy Metal.  It turns out to be a great combination of science fiction, fantasy and sexy women but more importantly, strong women.  Some groups may argue that these women, although animated, are made out to be too sexy and graphic made by male chauvinists, but I don't see it that way.  You don't have to be ugly to be a bad ass.  Heavy Metal has created worlds where female characters are strong, commanding and all around warriors and killers but at the same time keeping a profound sexuality, although very exaggerated.

I love strong women, I always have, but unfortunately strong women sometimes never get their due credit.  Sometime they do however.  Look at some of the characters in the genre we all enjoy; Kara Thrace and President Roslin for Battlestar, the infamous Sarah Connor played brilliantly by both Lena Headey and Linda Hamilton for Terminator and I'd be remiss if I didn't mention Xena: The Warrior Princess.  It would be impossible to mention all of the strong female characters I love; the list would go on and on but these can lead to recent examples of strong female characters.  Just look in order; the best fighter pilot on television, a President of a people, "the mother of the future", and Xena speaks for herself being "The Warrior Princess".

Combine all of that and this is what you'll get below.  Over the top sexy and erotic women welding swords and guns dripping with blood, worlds that are fantastic in thought, monsters, demons, heroes, goddesses, queens, sorceresses, warriors, myth and legends all of which comes from the mind of the artists.

Below you'll find nearly 180 different photos at various sizes created by tons of different artists most of which I don't know who.  Some of the fantasy art comes from the minds and skill of people like (click on the names for their websites) Lorenzon Sperlonga, Tom Fleming, Tariq Raheem, Genzoman and Julie Bell (I especially like her work).  Believe me, if I can name all of the creators I would but unfortunately I don't know those names.  Some of the photos are tagged with the artists name and sometimes their websites, so keep and eye out.

Some of the photos that are larger than the others are the pics that I like the most, for the most part.  The first photo below is just awesome.  I wish I could put into words on how much I like how it looks.  Next you'll see the legendary battle between Perseus and the Kraken.  After that you'll see an excellent yet frightening creation of a demon that would make Satan crap his pants... if that isn't a interpretation of the guy himself, I'm not sure.  Last is simply the latest cover of Heavy Metal magazine.  These photos are different artistically; some are cartoony, some are from comic books, some are created to look like celebrities (only a couple) but most are just creations from the mind.  Browse through the gallery and enjoy what you can find.  Maybe you'll learn to appreciate the world that is created out of beauty, horror and just shear awesomeness.  With luck, the next Heavy Metal movie being produced by David Fincher will look and feel as cool as these creations below.  You can read the latest on that film HERE!

Make sure you click to enlarge, but a lot of photos aren't that big.

Good article Phil, but I think you posted too many pictures, and dulled the impact of your words.

Given that about half your examples are by Rod Royo, don’t you think you should have mentioned his name somewhere in the article?

I thought I made it clear in the article that I didn’t know all of the illustrators names. Maybe next time you should actually read it instead of bitching.

Some of the photos were created by Rod Royo…. there’s your credit.

quite a few goodies there, thanks for the hard work!

pay no attention to naysayers, more is better, though it might’ve been smart to break them up into galleries of 20-30.
