Wanted director helms Moby Dick
I'm taking out my book titled "Stupid Remake Ideas" and adding this to it.
Everyone knows, or at least heard of, the classic nature of Moby Dick. A film about Captain Ahab obsessing for revenge against a titanic white whale named Moby Dick for destroying his ship and taking his leg; told by a sailor named Ishmael. Moving on...
The trades are reporting that Timur Bekmambetov was hired by Universal Pictures to remake Moby Dick. Bekmambetov directed this summers action hit Wanted. He'll be directing from a script written by Bill Collage and Adam Cooper but it won't be the in the same classical way or as Cooper puts it, "our vision isn't your grandfather's 'Moby Dick".
The structure of Moby Dick is going to be change, probably in a more commercial way. "This change will allow them to depict the whale's dicimation of other ships prior to its encounter with Ahab's Pequod, and Ahab will be depicted more as a charismatic leader than a brooding obsessive," says Variety. The story also won't be told from Ishmael's perspective.
Isn't Ahab's obsessive nature the overall theme of Moby Dick; obsession and revenge. How charismatic can somebody be if their leg was ripped off by a giant whale... It doesn't matter because I think this is another stupid idea. If the film turns out to be good then great but is this really needed? We already seen two different films, the first being made in 1956 starring Gregory Peck and the other in 1998 starring Patrick Stewart. Just like almost every remake, I'm expecting this movie to be a disaster.
