Fringe Review

When Fringe was first announced and described, everyone at once said, "X-Files?".

It seems like J.J. Abrams, Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci's names come up everyday.  J.J. Abrams is the director of the new Star Trek film, he's also been behind LOST and Cloverfield among other hits.  Kurtzman and Orci is the team that penned Trek as well as Transformers one and two.  They're also behind Eagle Eye starring Shia LaBeouf which comes out this Friday.  It should be obvious by those credits that those men are very talented in their line of work; so what is ahead of that team?  In this particular case is the new FOX television series Fringe.  It's the end of the weekend and I've finally been able to watch the first two episodes.  Lead by FBI agent Olivia Dunham played by Anna Torv, a team investigates unknown and unexplained phenomena with a scientist and his son.  John Noble is Dr. Walter Bishop, an institutionalize scientist that was recruited by Dunham and the FBI to help investigate something his research might have caused.  Along for the ride and to make sure his father doesn't do anything crazy is Peter Bishop played by Joshua Jackson.  So is Fringe another X-Files?  No, its not but the similarities are there.  Overall however, Fringe is its own show.  As usual, here are my thoughts:

  • The best thing this show has to offer is a tremendous amount of intrigue.  There is a lot of scientific stuff going on that I don't understand but at the same time the issues for each episode have been really cool and creepy.  It makes me anticipate more creepy stories coming for the rest of the season.
  • What a great cast!  John Noble plays a fantastic character.  He's hysterically crazy but also a complete genius.  He's not all there or on the same page as everyone else but he'll have things figured out before you can blink.
  • Joshua Jackson is an actor that I've never really followed and I've never really cared for his work but here in Fringe he becomes a really likable character.  He's funny and extremely intelligent.  I think it's obvious he's a potential love interest for Olivia Dunham, but it's too early to tell.
  • I find Anna Torv incredibly cute first of all.  I love strong female characters, I always have.  Torv is the lead of the show and her character is the head of the team; with that comes a strong female character and Torv pulls it off really damn well.  She'd totally kick my ass if I messed with her and I might like it!
  • The other characters; Lance Reddick as FBI agent Phillip Broyles - awesome!  I love this guys delivery.  Kirk Acevedo plays agent Charlie Francis and this is the second series I've seen Acevedo in, the first being Band of Brothers.  So I already know he's a really good actor.
Dislikes:
  • I can't say that there is much that I don't like.  With any other new series, the cast needs to get comfortable in their roles.
I'm really into this show.  I've loved what I've seen in the first two episodes and I'm expecting I'm going to love the rest of the season.  Fringe is really creepy, funny and intense.  It has an X-Files vibe but it becomes it's own television series with its excellent cast.  If you haven't had a chance to see Fringe yet, I suggest you try it out.  You might be pleasantly surprise how good this show is.  It might actually be the best new show of this year or at least in my book but there is still more new television shows I haven't seen yet.  There's some critics that have said that Fringe isn't that good but as you can tell I don't agree.  As for my part I think Fringe is great but I also really liked Bionic Woman... we know how that went.  So that's it, I don't have much more to say than that.  When more episodes air, I'll post more of my thoughts.  As of now, I'm more interested in what you think of Fringe.  You guys usually have better thought out opinions than I, so fire away.

Where the X-Files had the supernatural this has, as the Doctor in Blink would put it, wiggly-wobble science.
I find it a watchable enough show. It would loose in a heartbeat if I had to choose between it or Pushing Daisies.

I’ve never seen Pushing Daisies but I do hear good things about it.
