What’s in Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man deal?

Word came out last week that both director Sam Raimi and actor Tobey Maguire will return to the Spider-Man franchise to film back to back sequels, Spider-Man 4 and 5.  Times Online was able to get some interesting information on what that deal was to convince Tobey Maguire to return to a character he said he was done with once upon a time.

Thanks to Cinemablend, "[Maguire] worked a deal that will earn him a stunning $50 million paycheck for shooting Spider-Man 4 & 5 back to back."  Shooting two films back to back is really time consuming and could take between 6 months to a year.  Usually, it takes about 3 to 4 months to film a movie these days but that depends on each movie.  "...in addition to earning a ridiculous amount of money, he's being granted 'family time' as part of the deal," says Cinemablend. "...his deal will stipulate that he's allowed to take early mornings and evenings off, to hang out with his kid," who is a 22 month girl.

I can respect someone for wanting to spend time with their family but I'm curious to know how this will affect the production of this film.  Actors are usually on set for 10 to 12 hours a day, sometimes more, and if Maguire is going to be coming in late and leaving early who knows if they'll be able to get any work done.  The good thing for both Maguire and Raimi is that this might be it for the franchise.  After they're done they could finally move on to other projects I'm sure they've been itching to get at.  On the down side, these movies could suck just like Spider-Man 3 but I'm holding out a little hope.

Overall, as for Maguire's pay and work schedule... I don't care.  It's not like I'm paying him with my own money.  It's the studio's money to lose if Maguire takes advantage of them.  It just makes me laugh because there's plenty of actors with families.  I doubt Angelina Jolie asks to come in late and leave early during shooting and she's got a bunch of kids.  Whatever, it's not even a big deal... just as long Spider-Man 4 and 5 doesn't have dancing numbers and Mary Jane bullshit.

On the flip side, good for Maguire on his big pay check.  He's making more money for 2 movies than I will ever make in 2 life times.

The odd part is that it IS your money. Its your nine bucks that you shell out to see some really lame sequels that are so going the way of Star Wars and Batman and Robin.

I am so sick of Toby that I can no longer see straight. He is sleep walking through the defining or at least stereotyping roles of his career and has one of my favorite franchises circling the bowl.

Spiderman 3 was an epic waste of time talent and money.

I can only hope that with what they are spending on the dancing monkey they do not forget to spend some cash on a decent script.

I’m so tired of the Spider-Man 3 bashing. I really enjoyed the movie. Yes it had flaws and some scenes I could do without, but people make it out to be Batman and Robin. Speaking of, I hope there isn’t some sort of impossible Superhero to have a successful trilogy/quad curse.

    - First two Donnor Superman movies are critically acclaimed, last two were terrible.

    - First two Burton Batman movies are critically acclaimed, last two with Schumacher were terrible.

    - First two Raimi Spider-Man movies are critically acclaimed, the third one is (supposedly) terrible. If the fourth has this same reaction, I’m inclined to believe this :P

I never thought of that… Superman, Batman, wow. That’s totally true on how the first two were good movies then the following two sucked. I hope that isn’t the case for Spider-Man 4 and 5. I want them to be good, I really do.

Im sorry but Spiderman 3 for fanboys such as myself was just truly atrocious. In comparison to the Nipple suit in BM&R I got a totally lame dance sequence with a dark haired toby to show how ” bad ” he was becoming .. WTf was that about?

Gwen Stacey who in the comic was and is a pivotal character in Parkers life was a total sham.
Venom was a joke and the only good actor was a two bit pice for Sandman.

The reason that there is a two movie rule is that after the first they try to make the second better.
Then after the second they switch up directors and actors and yadda yadda and the whole thing slowly goes to pot.

Personally I think they are better off sticking to the already great stories written by comic writers. Plot lines just dont fall into your lap any easier than that.

I am annoyed that they take a good villan and turn him into some shmuck and kill him off at the end of the film

    Joker (Batman)
    Penquin ( Bman Returns)
    Green Goblin
    Hobgoblin
    Doc Oc
    Venom
    Sandman
    Iron Monger
    Cat Woman

These are not just throw away villans they occupy major face time in the comic pages. You dont just drop one out of a window and announce .. ” Whoops hes dead”

So yes Spider3 was lame. four and five.. redeem it or go home.. .
