Venom Spinoff Moving Forward

The summer of 2007 turned out to be a let down when it comes to movies except for Transformers and a couple of others.  One of the worst films of the year and the biggest disaster was Spider-Man 3 for several reasons.  One of the reasons that made the movie into a crap fest was the actor who played Venom, Topher Grace.  Several months ago rumors surfaced that a Venom spinoff might be put into productions, but since then I haven't heard anything.

The trades recently reported that Sony is going ahead with a Venom spinoff.  "[Sony] is hoping the character could serve as an antidote to the aging 'Spider-Man' franchise in the way that Fox has used Wolverine to add longevity to its 'X-Men' franchise," says The Hollywood Reporter.  "The studio had commissioned a draft of the script from Jacob Estes, a writer of the specialty film 'Mean Creek,' released several years ago by Paramount Classics."

I think a film that centers on a villain is a great idea but after the nightmare from Spider-Man 3 I'm skeptical that Venom can hold his own in his own feature film.  Whatever they do I hope they recast Topher Grace... seriously, he ruined SM3 and the character.  If they are really going ahead with a spinoff they really need to take good care of it.  They need to come up with a good solid script and get an actor that can handle the role, not Topher Grace who sucked.  Let's see where this goes.
