Djimon Hounsou As Thulsa Doom

Djimon HounsouFor a long time rumors of a Conan remake have been coming and going.  Today apparently a major character from the Conan universe is getting his own movie.

Thulsa Doom once played by James Earl Jones in Conan the Barbarian is now going to be played by Djimon Hounsou in his own film.  Hounsou and Dynamite Entertainment are producing a feature film that shows the "origins of the flawed hero and show how his road to hell was paved with good intentions."

Hounsou is an awesome actor and he's great in just about anything he does.  He's a bad ass for sure, but I don't know if I'm buying him in this role.  I don't think he can create the same type of presence James Earl Jones did in Conan the Barbarian.  I need to see more to really make an opinion.

The other thing is; is there even an audience for a Thulsa Doom movie?  If a Conan remake is going nowhere how could a Thulsa Doom movie get off the ground and make an impact in the movie world.  I really don't think it can.  If this does get made I'm predicting that it's not going to do big numbers at the box office simply because I don't believe Thulsa Doom has an audience.

I gotta disagree here on a premise point. I just got finished watching Conan again on cable, and I gotta say I never felt that James Earl Jones performance was anything like you say. The dialogue was minimal and the acting was stiff. I found nothing truly intriguing about his character. Personally I would Love a Conan remake that goes a more Lord of the Rings feel with more action and better acting.

    Hey Christian,

I understand what you’re saying even though I disagree with it. I thought one of the best things about Conan was the fact that there was minimal dialogue. For me a lot of the film was told with the great score by Basil Poledouris.

I will agree when you say that there’s nothing intriguing about the character but that’s because there isn’t a back story. While I’m sure that this new film won’t stick to the Conan the Barbarian canon, it will be interesting to see were this character comes from.

I’m still very skeptical on Hounsou… I could be wrong, he is a great actor.
