Heavy Metal Dropped By Paramount

Heavy MetalBack in March word came out that David Finchner (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) was heading a new Heavy Metal project. At the time I said that I haven't seen the movies in a long time and between now and then, that changed. Just a couple of weeks ago I rewatched both films. The first movie is really cool and the second is just as cool, both really not having any great stories, in my opinion, but at the same time being simply macho, violent and sexy. That being the case, with the material avalible and the right person at the helm, an updated version could be something totally amazing. So I've been looking forward to a start in production. Unfortunately we might have to wait longer than we thought.

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Paramount Studios has dropped the project. "...Tim Miller, whose Blur Studio is handling the animation, says he and Fincher, along with current Heavy Metal publisher Kevin Eastman, are now shopping the film to other studios because Paramount's new production execs felt the movie was too risque for mainstream audiences," according to the site. Just like the first film, Fincher's version is to have "8 to 10.... shorts in a single movie with each segment helmed by a different director."

THIS SUCKS! I was really hoping Fincher ws going to get this going as soon as possible but Paramount has other ideas. I have no doubt another Studio will pick it up but I hope it's done fast because I'd love to see this film as soon as possible. When I posted about this story in March I wasn't sure if this film would be live-action, 2D animation or CGI. With the mention of Blur Studios, I visited their website and checked out their animation reel (Quicktime) and OMG does it look awesome. They've really created some popular CGI stuff over the years and it all looks so damn cool. Heavy Metal in CGI would totally be sick. In a way I'm glad Paramount choose not to do it instead of watering down Fincher's plan. I think Heavy Metal should very much remain violent and erotic as it already is. Hopefully soon we'll know more.
