Star Trek At Comic-Con
By now everyone who reads movie sites should be well aware that Paramount Pictures isn't making an appearance at this July's Comic-Con or more accurately not making a major appearance. Even so a lot of pundits, critics and fans alike really can't see Paramount not doing any promotion for JJ Abrams reboot of Star Trek, a film that really needs good buzz to come out of the Con. Comic Con is the perfect place to start the early promotion and it's a perfect time to quench my thirst for... something for the love of god.
Vic Holtreman, the gentleman who runs ScreenRant.com brings this subject up and makes some good points about Paramount and Star Trek; "...I am wondering if Paramount is playing the marketing game here - playing coy about not having a panel, and then dropping some sort of surprise bombshell on attendees in order to generate maximum hype." Vic continues using Iron Man as a perfect example, "I mean look at the timing here - it coincides with Iron Man almost to the day. Iron Man had buzz prior to the Con, then at the Con Jon Favreau showed the audience some amazingly juicy footage that had everyone going wild with anticipation. That was end of July 2007 and the movie opened in early May 2008." I have no doubt that JJ Abrams has "juicy" footage to show us as Vic puts it. Even though this may be difficult to sell to the non Trek fans, whatever Abrams shows to us is probably going to be amazing and get the fans going by starting to spread the word.
As stated, the 2007 Comic Con was at the end of July and Iron Man premiered May of the following year. Guess what... It's the same with Star Trek; it has it's release in early May of 09 so Vic asks us the question, "Will Paramount really let the biggest promotional opportunity of the year for JJ Abrams Star Trek go without taking advantage of it?"
The answer is YES under one condition. The condition that the people at Paramount are the biggest bunch of morons to walk the Earth in expensive suits and nice cars. I can't buy that however. Paramount has been the top money making studio for a couple of years now and that say's something about their marketing strategy. Sure, some films have failed but overall, no other studio is making good competition for Paramount.
So I'm going to have to agree 100% with Vic: I say not bloody likely. Paramount may not have a panel with the cast but they have to show a trailer and the trailer is going to have to blow people to bits... then it has to get leaked onto the internet so I can see it cuz I'm too poor to go to the Con. New York is expensive to live in... you understand.
