Heavy Metal Makes A Return

Heavy MetalI don't know much about Heavy Metal... I've never read the magazine and I haven't seen the movies in a very long time, but I remember that I didn't care for them as much as other people have. Maybe I just need to watch them again, like I said, its been a while.

Variety is reporting that Heavy Metal is going to come back with David Fincher pushing the project. Fincher just wrapped up The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

Paramount Pictures will make an animated film inspired by the '70s sci-fi fantasy magazine Heavy Metal, with director David Fincher spearheading the project.

"Heavy Metal" will be stamped by the erotic and violent storylines and images that remain the trademark of a magazine that debuted in the U.S. in 1977. The mag introduced the works of American artists and writers such as Robert Silverberg, Harlan Ellison and H.R. Giger.

The film will consist of eight or nine individual animated segments, each of which will be directed by a different helmer.

Fincher will direct one of the segments; Kevin Eastman, the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" co-creator who is now owner and publisher of Heavy Metal, will direct another. So will Tim Miller, whose Blur Studios will handle the animation for what is being conceived as an R-rated, adult-themed feature.

I don't know if when they say 'animated' if that means CGI or motion capture. I honestly don't see them creating another film with traditional animation because thats not what people are looking for these days. CGI is usually the way to go. As much as I don't really know about anything Heavy Metal, I'd go for a new film. Maybe someone should educate me.

What I do know is that Heavy Metal is basically the father/mother of fantasy art which is something thats cool. I love how they portray these things. They're so sick and very erotic. I took a little trip over at the Heavy Metal Official Website and looked at a lot of the cover art. If you don't know much about this like me, head on over there. If your curious, I've put together some of the more recent cover art to look at.

As usual, click to enlarge photos. This stuff really is cool. I should get a poster of one of these.

That is definitely Louis Royo’s artwork. He is amazing. My favorite one is the second. He should draw Xena, I’d be so happy LOL
