Lost Season 4 Premiere Review

Lost

Just over seven months ago, the third season of the hit ABC television show, Lost , concluded. The final episode called, “Through The Looking Glass,” was in two words, Jaw Dropping. The moment we saw a bearded Jack (Matthew Fox) back in the United States, and ending off the season telling Kate (Evangeline Lilly), “We have to go back,” is something that gives “cliffhanger” its meaning. Seven months later the anticipation and wait is finally over. Was it worth the wait? Sure!

Lost starts of the way it ended, with flash forwards of those who apparently got back to the United States and off that dreaded island. So far we know that Jack, Kate and Hurley (Jorge Garcia) managed to get back to the US. There is still a couple of more to be named, but as of now, we don‘t know who they are. We know that Jake and Kate are back because of what we saw in the season three finale, and we know about Hurley’s return because the season four premiere is his featured episode.

To start things off, I really think and have to say that Matthew Fox is most definitely the strongest thing about this show. That’s not mentioning all of the strong things, mainly with characters that I’m not mentioning right now. The character of Jack is one of the most underrated characters on TV at the moment. True enough that competition is tough on Television, but I think Fox is one of the better characters. That’s because of the simple fact that Fox takes that role and turns it into a challenging, deep, rich, and emotional character. Its no different here in the premiere. Every time he shows up on the screen, I can feel his heroic reluctance, meaning that, even though he doesn’t have the intention of being a hero, his actions prove that he is and he works to save those people he’s bonded with for the course of the series. Unfortunately, season four starts of with Hurley, not a Jack centric episode. That isn’t a bad thing, but its not the choice I would have made. Starting off with one of the strongest characters is something that I would have done, for example, Sawyer, Locke, Ben or Desmond. Then again, most of the cast have amazing diverse parts that it’s really is hard to choose from. I’m not saying that I don’t like Hurley, I just don’t think he is the right person to kick off a new season… that is the biggest problem I had with the premiere.

What I really do like, is the change up from flash backs to flash forwards. I’m assuming that it is going to be kept up for most or half of the season. That said, I really don’t know, I’m just assuming. Flash backs are great for back story and character development, but seriously, after 3 seasons, its enough. The flash forwards are going to be proved refreshing to the viewer.

Of course, the saddest thing is telling Claire (Emilie de Ravin) about Charlie’s (Dominic Monaghan) death, a job in which Hurley takes. Its easy to feel bad at that point, but it isn’t the end for Charlie as he is now an hallucination of Hurley. Maybe we’ll see more of him in the future, I wouldn’t count on it though.

Overall, Lost’s premiere really isn’t a bad set up to the forth season, however It could have been bigger. I personally expected Lost to start of the way it ended for the third season, with a bang! S4 didn’t give me that feeling, and in a way disappoints me. Still, I’m very glad that Lost is back on the air although I don’t expect any answers to be given anytime soon. There is never answers with this show, only more questions.

Sure it’s a quick review, but its short and to the point. The good points are written and you can see what things I had issues with, but its nothing serious to hurt my rating of Lost. On a scale of one to ten, I rate the season 4 premiere of Lost, 7.5 out of 10.

Good review Phil….I personally enjoyed the season 4 start. Of course their are still not many answer, as usual, they give you a little tease, but thats what episodic TV is all about, so I’ll just the follow the season.

Good review, however, I think Hurley has a much bigger role in the show than you give him credit for. Using him to open S4 was perfect to get that ball (the truth) finally rolling.

Not to mention the other thing: Jack’s father = Jacob. Your thoughts?
