Sanctuary Gets Picked Up On The Sci Fi Channel

February 1st, 2008 · No Comments

SanctuaryThis is pretty big and interesting news.  The popular webseries, Sanctuary, has been picked up by the Sci Fi channel for a 13 episode run.  The Hollywood Reporter enlightens us:

Sci Fi Channel has greenlighted “Sanctuary,” the first television series to use live-action actors against virtual sets in the style of the features “300″ and “Sin City.”

Sci Fi has ordered a full 13-episode season of the new scripted drama series, which originated online as the first high-definition sci-fi Web series.

Sanctuary, which features 90% CGI sets, will be retooled for its transition to television, including the creation of a new two-hour premiere episode and expanding some characters.  Still, a lot of the footage from the web series will be used, with sme enhancement of the visual effects and the CGI background to play better on the TV screen.

This is a major success for a webseries.  Ok, sure, I know… they have connections, but the point is, who would have thought it would get picked up for regular TV.  Eh?  Writers strike maybe….  I did hear a rumor that the Sci Fi channel is completely dry on scripts and new programing.  Thats why, Battlestar Galactica: Caprica, is back on the board.

All that aside, I’m excited.  I really like Sanctuary.  Of couse I like Amanda Tapping.   I’m just annoyed it only got picked up for 13 episodes. Anyone miss the days when a season would last for 26 episodes a year.  Now shows are running anywhere between 13 and 20 a year… and for what.  Thats a whole different subject though.

I hope Sanctuary gets a fair shot at TV.  Sci Fi is usually pretty good with giving a fair shot to its new shows.  Hopefully people will like it and Sanctuary will continue.  I know I’m going to support it.

Until then, how about a bunch of photos from the series.  As usual, click to enlarge.
