Rookie TV Shows Should Get Another Chance!! - By Phil

This article is written by me, Phil, Chief Editor.  The article is that of my commentary and opinion alone.  Please respect that.

Right now, at this moment that I’m writing this, fall television shows are going off the air one by one, because of the current WGA strike. Almost every show has only been able to write 8 to 10 scripts, and only those scripts have been shot, and mostly all aired. The reason I write this is because some of the rookie shows are hanging in the balance of corporate suits and the stupid rating system. I won’t go down the list of new TV shows, but you as the reader know what they are. I am strongly under the opinion that no matter what the ratings or quality of the programming is, they should be given a chance to finish out a season or get a second season okayed, just for this year.

Let me start off by saying this. The rating system sucks, and I don’t understand why no studio’s can see that. Open up your eyes, look around you… and discover something called the internet, for one, and other recording devices that are not registered by the Nielsen rating system. As for the internet… maybe the studio’s don’t know it exists (sarcasm)… that probably why they can’t come to an agreement with the WGA because they have there heads up their collective asses. Studio’s are canceling TV shows, because the ratings aren’t good enough to keep the show on. That’s the normal way of things, as all of you know. However, they can’t understand why the ratings are low, even though they are aware of a large fan base, for whatever TV show is being produced. Don’t get me wrong, there are shows out there that are horrible and need to be cancelled, but that’s not what this article is about. I can go on forever about the rating system and discuss the reasons for low rated shows when they are in fact watched. So I’ll move on to what is to be discussed.

The reason for this article is to through out a plea to the studio’s and so on, the let the 1st year TV shows to get 1 more chance. Some shows currently, or just finished, on TV have only been able to air several episodes. Most people know that 7 to 10 episodes is not enough to learn its footing, or find its formula. Season 1 of any TV show is always a risk for any studio but its also the trial run. I know for a fact that some TV shows may not be renewed for a second season, and I think that’s unfair. This plea has nothing to do with the writers, I support there cause and I don’t blame anyone that TV shows are ending very early. I believe that its only fair that all of the low rated and low quality shows that are threatened with cancellation, should be given one more chance to prove themselves. If the strike continues to the point wear the current season can not be finished by any means, then green light a second season. When I say green light a second season, I DON’T MEAN LET THEM HAVE 7 EPISODES! Give them a full 18 - 22 episode season, to work out all the bugs and find their formula. If by the end of that, things do not improve, then by all means do what must be done. Again, I get very upset when studio’s cancel shows after only just a couple of episodes. I never seen the logic in that…. What? Do you automatically think everyone knew about your show since the beginning.

The bottom line is, give it a chance. Don’t pull a Firefly and pull a show that has potential, but hasn’t had the chance to prove itself. Stop putting all effort into creating more reality shows that a great many people do in fact don’t give a damn about. Use that time and money for TV shows that have the potential to really entertain. All of that said, its really sad that these things will never happen. I know that most shows are going to get cancelled despite my feelings or opinions on the matter. Yet, there is always a spark of hope in anything that you do.

Phil….I’m in agreement with your perspective, but the bottom line is…TV fans love reality shows….one of the stupid ones was Jessica Simpson and her huisband Nick, but you know what….they made money for the producers and THAT IS THE BOTTOM LINE. It is a matter of economics, what type of show will bring in the bucks. I don’t think they really care of the content, but any good show not withstanding, reality shows at least for now is the way to go and the producers are taking full advantage of them……..this is just my 2 cents.

I’m with ya Phil it’s just a shame that the entertainment industry is managed by accountants more than anyone else these day.

The math basically works out that if a show cost 5x’s as much as another show then it must be able to pull in 5x’s the viewership and revenue

Then you got to take into account that they can produce 5 shows that cost a 5th of the more expensive show and take control of a full night of view or 5 nights of prime time viewership with what it would cost to put out 1 good quality show.

Yes, I’m sure if they used the technology that’s already available in most peoples homes across America to see what people are watching they’d have completely different stats but then that would prove the accountants wrong and when you’re in charge you never want to be wrong.

The entire industry is so flawed its not even funny, and it seems like most studio’s aren’t even making an attempt to change with the times. Which, is hurting quality television.

I agree too. The current system needs to be scrapped. If my cable company can target ads, and enable pay per view events, surely they can tell what I’m watching and forward that info on. Maybe I can even get a discount for opting to provide my demographics(Yea ,I can dream)

I’ve often thought there should be a second chance network. These shows did garner some ratings, why not put them on its own channel, and see how they do. With the multiple channels afforded by the digitizing of TV signals, this would seem a no brainer.
